i was trying to get rid of xp because i have had problems since day one. i had 98 then upgrade. i was going to erase everything and go with linux but everytime i try to uninstall xp it says that 98 is incomplete. i know longer have the win 98 or xp disk. i have no clue were they went. what do i do.

what you would have to do is do a lowlevel format of your hard drive thats the best thing to do if your going to change OS what this does is change your hard drive to all 0,s like it was brand new. If you know what brand your hard drive is we can find the best lowlevel formatter to do the job. you having problems with Xp from the start most likely due to that there was a problem with your 98 that you don't know about any time you change OS it always best to do a clean install of the new OS even with the windows Xp upgrade cd you can do a clean install but you do have to have a windows 95,98,98se disk to do this. I'm running windows XP home and I love it I think its the best windows Microsoft as put out. I have never used linux so I can not tell you anything on it sorry. If you need step by step on how to do the lowlevel format let me know.

Barry, you can download Linux for free from the Internet, if you have a broadband connection. You'll need to boot from a Linux CD and use it to partition your disk, format and install over Windows.

I don't know what you use your computer for, but you'll likely be disappointed in Linux (sorry Linux fans). Linux just isn't ready for prime time desktop use yet. Unless your comfortable working from a command line, and are willing to learn the intricacies of a new operating system, I'd recommend you stick with Windows.

If you can't find your Windows CD, you'll have to go buy one. If you insist on Windows 98 you can probably find it cheap on eBay. However, I agree with Tazz that Windows XP is far superior, and that your problems were related to performing an upgrade on a corrupt Windows 98 system, rather than a clean install.
