I had some bugs yesterday. One was a hijacker called hotoffers.info/066/ the other was Trojan-Spy.HTML.Smitfraud.c. I managed to clean them, but now I have two minor problems.
First I was not able to get to common web sites like yahoo, msn or google, (I could get to google.com.au, however). When I tried to go to www.yahoo.com for instance, I got a blank page with just "soon." in the upper left corner. I was able to fix this with HiJackThis by deleting the redirects. I am including a HiJackThis scan since I cleared this problem. Is there anything else I should clear? (I am currently connected to the problem workstation by Netmeeting, since I am writing this from home, so do not let the Netmeeting stuff throw you.)
The second problem, is that when I killed the wp.exe in the Registry and replaced the wp.bmp with c:\windows\bliss.bmp to get rid of the Smitfraud.c message, I now have a black wallpaper, and cannot change it. I saw a post yesterday regarding this. I am running Windows XP Pro SP1. Is there a fix?

Here is HJT Log:

Hi there Ron!

The first thing we need to tackle is to get you updated to the newest version of HijackThis. Please go Here and download the newest version 1.99.1. Please be sure to save it to a permanent directory, such as C:\Prgram Files\HJT.

Once you have done this, please post a fresh HJT log here in a reply. I am going to ask someone to move this thread to the HijackThis forum, but it will leave a "redirect" here for you to click on.

Please do NOT remove anything else from the new HJT log! Let's take a look, and see what's there first, ok?

Ron:

Do you still have the OLD version of HJT on your system? If so, please do the following:

To restore the backups:
  • Open the OLD HiJackThis
  • Click Open the Misc Tools section
  • Click the Backups button
  • Place a check mark next to everything in that window
  • Click Restore
  • Click Yes
  • Reboot your computer
  • Now open the NEWER version of HJT and post a new log here without fixing anything!

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Reboot into safe mode.

2. Please download hoster , then Unzip the program and install it, then run it. Choose "restore original hosts" and then close the program.

3. Post another fresh HJT log here in a reply, and let me know how it's running now!

I cannot download hoster.zip from your link. I think it is because it is on an aol site. Is there someplace else I can find it? I tried google, no help, only aol again. If this thing just edits the hosts file, I have done that before. Is there anything else other than 127.0.0.1 pointing to localhost that I need?

I'm sorry. I didn't know that the address for hoster had changed. You can't just remove those entries. You really need to use this file and reset your ORIGINAL hosts file!

I have done as you asked. Here is my most recent HJT log. The user can now get to all web sites ok, so this part of the problem seems fixed. Can you now help me with the wallpaper issue I mentioned in the orginal post? Thank you.

Right click on desktop, select Properties. Click the Desktop tab, then the Customize Desktop button. Select the Web tab and uncheck everything in there. Apply and OK your way out of there and you should be good.

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  • AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  • SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  • IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  • CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  • Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  • Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
  • Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein

I removed the checks from Customize Desktop, but still cannot change my wallpaper. The background and browse buttons are grayed out. Any idea how to fix this? Thank you.

Ron:

Please disregard any advice from people who are not Staff Members here. Your hotoffers infection is in fact removed, and your hosts file is fine now that you followed instructions to replace it with the correct one.

I have talked with a few Experts, and they agree that the only way to fix this last problem may be to do an XP Repair Install. You can find instruction on how to do so HERE.

If there is anything else we can help you with, please let us know!
