Download Dial-a-Fix from this link. Extract the files and open the .exe program. Check Fix Windows Installer and make sure all the items in this section (MSI) are checked. Check Fix Windows Updates and make sure all the items in this section (wu/wuau) are checked. Click Go and try the updates.

If this didn't help click on the hammer button at the bottom of dial-a-fix. Mark Reinstall Automatic Updates Service and Click Go.

By the way, when you shut down the computer what is it show, on the Turn Off button. Are there updates waiting to be installed? If yes, what happens when you click the Turn Off button.

ok, i'm gonna try that. at shut down it doesn't say anything (i think you're referring to "shut down to install updates" or something like that, right?). it doesn't say anything, but the little security bubble in the icon tray shows up shortly after startup prompting me to install updates.

i think that might have actually made it worse. the updates are gone, the installer 3.1 is gone and microsoft update is gone (just have windows update now). here's the error message i get (i tried reinsall files for me but it didn't work):

Files required to use Microsoft Update are no longer registered or installed on your computer. To continue:


Register or reinstall the files for me now (Recommended)
Let me read about more steps that might be required to solve the problem

i tried to just download updates without getting microsoft updater and now the updater window just sits there... it says:

installing updates

the updates are being downloaded and installed

preparing for download



now what?

i tried it again and updates seem to have installed fine. looks like i just have to get the wires fixed now! thanks for all your help and patience!!!!

anything else you recommend i do?

Did anybody actually figure out how to fix this? Same problem - 700m and internal speakers don't work. External's fine. I think I may have pulled out a headphone jack too agressively - if that's possible:)

I had a similar problem from past 3 days (Internal speakers in my laptop were NOT WORKING, head phone and external speakers when connected were working fine). Even i re-installed all the drivers, ran Diagnostics and stuff that did not fix the issue. Then the Dell tech advised me to plug and unplug the external speaker jack 5 to 10 times..and magic the internal laptop speakers started working.
He explained me that due to dust accumulation the switch in the laptop that enables the external speaker and disables the internal speaker when we plug the jack might have got stuck which was causing this issue.

I understand that thread is old but, Hope this helps people in future.
