Paul,
download and run 'CCleaner'-free program
run the 'Cleaner' and 'Issues'
go to 'Windows Update'
choose 'express' update and it should find windows installer
install all security updates and whatever shows up in 'express'

If that don't work try tuneup2007-30 day trial.
http://www.tune-up.c...gn=ExactBranded
Under Cleanup and repair-run 'Tuneup DiskCleaner' and 'Tuneup RegistryCleaner'.
Then run windows update again -express option.

Or download it from here-
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884016

If it still gives you trouble uninstall windows installer as per instructions on that site.
Then reinstall it.

This behaviour often occurs when windows Installer "thinks" that it has not finished installing or uninstalling something. Usually the dialog will offer the name of the application involved. Do you get anything like that?

after re-installing successfuly Adobe Acrobat 7 & Photoshop 7, the windows installer does not bother me any more. But to reinstall I had to go to safe mode. Then all seems to be working ok.
Thanks very much for advice.
