I've had my computer for a few years now and i use it constantly. right now its at the point where, despite my efforts to keep spyware out and keep it running smoothly, it's just getting slow and overrun with programs. i have already moved all of my files to my backup drive, and i'm just wondering what is the safest way to completely restore my computer, or get it as close to its original state when i first got it.

Presumably your PC was supplied with a set of Recovery Discs or a regular Microsoft XP installation CD? Just use whichever of those you have.
That's the only way to get your PC back to the way it was when you bought it. Whichever method you choose you'll have to re-install any applications that weren't installed when you bought it.
