I keep getting a runtime error window that pops up and tells me that I have a runtime error and points to C:\Program Files\Symantec Antivirus\rtvscan.exe. The AV program also has an exclamation point over the 'symantec shield' and my Auto-Protect will not run. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions it would be much appreciated. The HijackThis log is below.

Hi,

It appears that your version of Norton/symantec got damaged, so I suggest you uninstall Norton and reinstall it again.. or reinstall another Antivirus instead.

There's nothing suspicious in your log here...

I've already tried to reinstall it. I was running Kapersky which I LOVE, but unfortunately for me the university network I run on has taken it off their list of supported AV programs. Would you suggest trying to get in touch with campus IT and seeing if there was anything special to notice during installation?

Hi,

Well, there are other Antivirus as well. Anyway, first thing you should do here is to uninstall Norton, because it is very clear here that Norton is responsible for these errors.

Look in my signature below for other Antivirus I recommend. You'll also find some free ones over there. For example, Avira is a great Antivirus. It's for free, but if you purchase the premium version, it also detects spyware/adware.

The only problem is that our network is using a cisco network monitor that requires the use of 1 of three AV programs all of which cost money. The only one they offer free to students is Symantec. If you dont' run them or have your systems up to date with the MS updates then your computer is blocked from the network.

So basically, you can only choose one Antivirus and that is Symantec since it's the only one you can get for free?
That's sad. :whistling: Because imho Norton isn't that good either and as you've noticed, Norton/Symantec may be responsible for a lot of problems. This since it's known that Norton may still have a lot of incompatibility issues with other software and/or hardware.

Not sure how I can help you then... the fact is, you need to get rid of Norton - uninstall it, because it's the cause of your problems. Then reinstall it again, but not before you totally uninstalled it previously and rebooted after uninstall.
Anyway, seems like you are not the only one with this problem... The internet is full with it, for example here.

What I suggest here is, if the University only allows you to use Symantec, then ask if they want to contact Symantec Support to solve this issue, because after all, Symantec is where you should be if you're having problems with their product.
Sometimes you can resolve Runtime errors in Norton by clearing the contents of the LiveUpdate Folder, since a corrupted LiveUpdate folder may cause similar RunTime errors for all Norton Components and your "shield" will be disabled then.

You're welcome. Let me know if "clearing" the LiveUpdate folder solved your problem, because that may be interesting to know :whistling:
