1. I have Avast antivirus and its real time protection has warned me of possible trojans or viruses. However when i perform the complete scan shortly after that it doesn't find anything. Is it because the realtime protection stops the opening of the webpage preventing it from uploading trojans? The webpage content was never displayed, it was blank. The computer doesn't act suspiciously and i have scanned with AVG-anti spyware also but it doesn't find anything. I will post a HiJack this log and would appreciate if someone can take a look at it.

2. Annother question, I have read at this site that it is not recommendable to have AVG-anty spyware and another antivirus software simultaneously at a cmputer. Should i uninstal AVG?

Hi flameeater,
It is generally not a good idea to run two Anti-Virus programs with realtime protection. As long as they are not both running as resident memory protection you should be ok. AVG Anti-Spyware however is not an Anti-Virus. If you use AVG Anti-spyware, you will also need a Anti-Virus to supplement it.

1.
Open download AVG Anti-Spyware
  • Run AVG Anti-Spyware and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
    • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.

  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close AVG Anti-Spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

2.
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
Do not use it yet, we will use it later. Save it somewhere you can acces it easily, like your desktop.

3.
Reboot into Safe Mode by continuously tapping the F8 key as soon as the computer begins to boot. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

4.
Open ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

5.
IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
  • Lauch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
  • AVG Anti-Spyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
  • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  • Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the results of the AVG Anti-Spyware report scan in your next reply.
Post the AVG log, the uninstall list and a fresh Hijack This log in a reply.

Hi flameeater,
I'm not sure what happened to my last post but your log is clean.
Avast is pickingup on something on a website and stopping you from loading it. Most likely a malicious file or code. This is a good sign that it is working well.

Here is a list of tools that I like to recommend to people to help ensure safe surfing on the internet, and to help you from getting infected again.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy and AdAware
These are very powerful tools which can search and remove a large number of infections from your compouter. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well. Run one after the other.
  • Grisoft AVG Anti Virus
This is a great tool for people wanting free antivirus software. It include's real-time protection, scheduled scans, automatic definition updates, and email scanning. DO NOT install more than one antivirus program. They will conflict, and provide less protection, not more. Uninstall any existing antivirus programs if you're going to install AVG.
  • AVG Anti-Spyware
This is a geat tool that is very effective at helping remove some of the more difficult infections. It has resident memory protection. It is free for 30 days. Works well when used with ATF cleaner first.
  • ATF Cleaner
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only. Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  • SpywareGuard
Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  • IE-SpyAd
This tool puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  • Windows Updates
It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein
