System 32 problem

Found my pc onto to screen with following error:

root7 system32\hal.dll file missing or corrupt :whistling:

I do not know what caused this or how to fix.....big concern is not losing data on the harddrive.
I do not know what info you need to help me.
Can anyone help please????? :blink:

Not without an XP CD in your flavour of Windows, no.

Does it have to be the original xp of can i just buy another xp cd and use the new one to repair it w/o losing the info on my harddrive?

You can buy a new CD (though it will probably come with a new licence as well) and use that.
You need to have a CD that's the same as the Windows on your computer. That is, if you have XP Pro, you need an XP Pro CD. If you have XP Home, you need an XP Home CD. Service Pack version matching would be handy, but not necessary (an older CD you can whack SP2 on top of it later).
