Windows will not update from Microsoft

I just did a windows XP repair of my computer and when i try to download and install the updates from Microsoft they will not download or install. I managed to install IE 6 but that is the furthest i have gotten. I've tried the FAQ's on Microsoft.com but none of those work. Help would be appreciated.
