I've lost my desktop.

I have lost my desktop. When I use CTRl ALT DEL I get the task manager, but I can only restart or shutdown. I tried rebooting in safe-mode, the screen stays blank with "safe mode" in each bottom corner. I also tried restoring to a version that last worked and got a message about windows not starting due to an error with IPVNMon.sys. I haven't added any new hardware, nor have I (knowingly) downloaded or added any new software. I am accessing the internet now with my work computer. Please help!! and forgive me. I am not very computer savvy. :whistling:
