Making monitor bright

Simply put, how can I make my monitor VERY bright. Not bright as in rather than dim but bright as in white rather than black. The highest setting on my monitor options (using the buttons on the monitor itself) isn't bright enough.

There are no other options. How old is the monitor? If it's several years old and running without screensaver (or even with screensaver) it might be degraded.
