IBM ThinkPad R31 Headphone connector

I have an IBM ThinkPad Model R31-2656-2GX notebook and i'm trying to use my headphones with it. The problem i'm having is that with the headphones connected the sound also comes out from the notebook's speakers...
I tryed setting to mute with the integrated key on the keyboard, but no sound comes out from both ways.
Is this a limitation of this model or am i missing something?.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
