This has happened twice so far. One time upon start-up, and one time upon shutting down, I heard a thunder noise (I used to use Weather Bug on an old computer, and it sounds like something similar to what it gives off when it detects an oncoming storm). However, I have no programs like Weather Bug on my computer.

I use Windows XP Media Center Edition, SP 2. I've gone through my program files to get rid of anything suspicious, and I've had McAfee run it's scheduled scans now and then (There are a total of 20 quarantined files since this computer was reformatted about a month ago). However, the 2nd time I heard this sound occurred 5 minutes ago when I turned the computer on.

What is this sound I'm hearing? Is it a virus? Is it harmless? What can I do to get rid of it?

It's probably a Joke Virus, scan with Spyware Terminator (and i suggest you keep it, great, great program and free!) or the more popular Spybot S&D. It probably will find a joke.

Good Luck, i once downloaded a supposedly "game" turned out when i executed it the speakers went full blast with a "Hey, Everybody, I'm watching Porn over here! sound.

Thanks! Turns out this is my fault. I checked my sound settings like you suggested, and sure enough, my start up and shut down noise was thunder. And it just hit me at that moment that it came with a windows theme i had downloaded a few weeks ago that i'm currently using. No idea that sounds were included in the theme.

Oh and that virus you got sounds hilarious. Hope it didn't happen in the workplace or library or anything.
