I recently used the recovery console to recover from a boot sector problem. The computer was working ok except for windows update through ie5. I decided to reinstall windows 2000 pro so I could use windows update, and upgrade to ie6. The install hangs when registering components, and hard booting restarts the install process. If I go to safe mode, the install errors out, and reboots the system.
Any ideas on how to either finish the install or end it? also, how to find and install ie6 without windows update? thanks for all help!

hi, welcome to geekstogo, I would wipe the drive and reinstall 2000pro again, but the trouble is that the more time moves on, the less supported that system will be under windows and the hardware makers, so I suggest linux since it won't force you on like this, nor will you have to pay anything for it. You will need to choose which linux you would like(choose a live-CD type distro so that you will know before installing if the driver are recognized, and if any drivers are not recognized just find another linux since there are many many distros out there) and you will need to have the forum of that type of linux close at hand since you will have questions but the reward is worth the effort and either way you lose nothing by giving this suggestion a go when you concider the alternative.

OK I am bias, I like kubuntu but there is full really badly written(well at least I tried) thread about it here on geekstogo in the other opperating systems, but distributions of linux are like wine so I am not saying that you will perfer kubuntu to pclinux or puppy or others but what I can promise you is that it is rewarding and what you learn is yours
