Hi,

I have read a number of posts from this forum (and many others) and seem to be going round in circles. The basic problem is that I used to have ZoneAlarm which I uninstalled so I could install BitDefender. Ever since uninstalling ZoneAlarm I haven't been able to reinstall ZoneAlarm or install any other AV software (Bit Defender, Norton Internet Security, AVG).

From the various posts I get the feeling I might be infected with something that is preventing the installation of AV software (as installing other programs seems fine). Things I've tried so far:
  • Running several online scanner tools
  • Running several command line scanner tools
  • Booting in safe mode (although this results in the blue screen!)
  • Running cleanup software such as CCleaner
  • Running registry checking software
I'm running out of things to try, although I've not done anything with HijackThis as to be honest I don't really know what this is!! Can anyone help? It's driving me mad.

Thanks,

Dayle

Hello collinsdayle and welcome to G2G.

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

OK,

So I've run all this things in the list and have attached the log files below.
Note: I had to rename the .log files to end with .txt as the web site said I wasn't allowed to upload these type of files!

Finally, unfortunately I'm not able to boot in safe mode. When I try any of the safe mode options (Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, Safe Mode with COmmand Prompt) it seems to quickly list a lot of lines of text on the screen and then goes to the blue screen saying "to prevent damage windows has ... etc".

Thanks,

Dayle

Good job, just one scraggler to get rid of. How is everything running?
For future reference, no need to upload files, just right click on the text, copy then paste the results here. :whistling:

Please download the OTMoveIt by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt.exe to run it.
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\Documents and Settings\Dayle Collins\Application Data\m\flec006.exe
    C:\Qoobox

  • Return to OTMoveIt, right click on the "Paste List of Files/Folders to be moved" window and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything on the Results window to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it on your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt
*If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately, you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine, choose Yes.
**If a reboot was necessary or you needed to Exit before posting the log, you will find a copy of the log at the root of the drive where OTMoveIt is installed, usually at :
C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles\********_******.log
(where "********_******" is the "date_time")

Click "Exit" to close OTMoveIt.

Remove all old versions of Java and J2SE in your Add\Remove Programs, they cause a security vulnerabilty. Then update your Java to Java 6 update 2.
Updating Java and Clearing Cache
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Java Icon (coffee cup) in the Control Panel.

Please find the update button or tab in the Java Control Panel. Update your Java then reboot.
  • If you are unable to update you can manually update by going here:
  • After the reboot, go back into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon.
  • Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files button.
  • There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave CheckedApplications and Applets
    Trace and Log files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.
Let's take a look and see if we can find anything preventing you from booting to Safe Mode:
To get safeboot.txt:
  • Click Start>Run
  • Copy the lines in the box below, and paste it in the run box that opens:

    regedit /e c:\safeboot.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot"

  • Click “Ok”
  • Double click the My Computer icon, then your C drive
  • In there, you will see a file called safeboot.txt. Double click to open it.
  • Copy and paste the text into a reply to your thread.
Let's clean out cookies and Temp folders:

Hi,

Again, I've completed all the steps and I've posted the output from OTMoveIt below. I had some trouble with the regedit command as running the command as specified didn't produce the output file safeboot.txt. When I looked in the registry using regedit I couldn't actually find the registry entry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot. I did however find the registry entry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\SafeBoot. Therefore I ran the command regedit /e c:\safeboot.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\SafeBoot" and posted the output from this below. Although not sure if this is even vaugely useful !!!

Thanks,

Dayle

You should have HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\SafeBoot and maybe also HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Control\SafeBoot in your registry.

We can try System File Checker, you need XP installation cd of the same version that is installed in you computer (Professional, Home, with/without sp2). You may borrow one if you need. Insert the disk into the drive and click Start > Run. Type sfc /scannow and let the repair process go all the way. When it ends the dialog box just disappears. Take the disk out and try to boot in safe mode.

Let me know how that goes.

If that don't work, I may have to send you to the Techies as they are much more knowledgeable in that area. I asked the Tech boyz for some advice on your behalf and we will see what they come up with. Good news, your PC looks clean.

Peace out for now.
