I have been running all of the recommended tests and don't find anything. I used PC Pitstop on dial-up using Earthlink Total Access. The report came back saying that my system was unusually slow and had a CPU load of 87%.

I ran the PC Pitstop tests using a DSL connection that was made available to me and the tests gave me a good score with PCU load of 0%.

Could it be something in the hiding in the Earthlink software?

you have a few things that can be fixed (any file missing), but nothing in there accounts for your issue.

The Earthlink Total Access stuff...is that the thing that is supposed to increase the speed of your internet over the dial up? If so, I would disable it and see if it makes a difference.

I have run into one machine where that software was causing some issues.

CTRL-ALT-DEL, choose PROCESSES tab in Task Manger...what consuming most of your CPU time?

Thanks for getting back so quickly gerryf.

I had forgotten to turn off selective startup before my original post.

After I check out some of this I will post another log.

really. That is interesting. I have AVG on several machines and it is not running like that.

What do you use AVG to monitor? Email? Web? Instant messageing? If you disable AVG, does the problem disappear?

It turns out that AVG had a scheduled scan running at the same time that I had done the PC Pitstop thing. I watched the processes and the performance monitior while running a scan and it runs the load up to the high 90 range.
This is my daughter's computer. I found that it only has 128 MB of memory installed. I had a spare 128 and installed it. The speed of programs opening is much improved. I have ordered a 256 for her.
This computer had a lot of malware on it when she asked me to look at it. I had already removed scvhost.exe. by following instruction from another post. The only program that found it was pc pitstop.
I find your site very helpful and enlightening.
Thanks.
