I think from looking at similar infection info on this site that my system is infected with trojan W32. I tried earlier to remove it using the Smitfraud protocol but was unable to find the smitfraud.exe file (don't know why the other parts of the program seemed to download ok?).
You should know that I have had trouble with Nortons it fialed to remove Downloader.mislead and Adware PurityScan altohugh it did detect both.
Hope this is clear to you (I'm sure it is!) and you can help.

We can definitely help you, but first you need to help us. The first step in this process is to apply Service Pack 1a for Windows XP. Without this update, you're wide open to re-infection, and we're both just wasting our time.

Apply the update, reboot, and post a fresh Hijack This log.
