I would like to know which programs you should avoid downloading. I.E Macromedia Flash Player, Musicmatch-those type of applications and others out there.

umm you should try avioding java if at all possible since it is very vulnerble to viruses because it accesses the internet with out your permission to download stuff, i had this a couple of times where java was infected and that it started to download viruses in sted of updates

also try to aviod a anti virus called "360" it will scan after you install it and delete the important componets of your computer... hope this helps

There is nothing wrong with Java itself. Infections are probably available that hi-jack the downloading of Java updates but this isn't a Java problem.
OpenOffice uses Java for various, non-essential functionality.
Flash and Shockwave are pretty much essential pieces of software for a lot of websites these days (even just for showing the adverts), and I'd be very surprised if you get very far without one or the other.
