Sorry I can't name my infection, but here's my issue--i had downloaded a few items including an unzipping program called winRAR and immediately had pop-ups and my internet browser would crash frequently. the error messages from the crashes mentioned sstqd.dll and sqmwqbuw.dll in the system32 folder--i was able to disable internet explorer from using them but i can't delete them. my browser isn't crashing any more but i'm still getting the pop-ups. there's several other files in the system32 folder that have the same date as the aforementioned and thus make me suspicious.

i also tried to use system restore to set the hard drive back to before the download, but my earlier restore points were nowhere to be found.

Next, rename your copy of hijackthis.exe to seek.exe and post a fresh log run in Normal Mode. It's possible that a nasty is interfering with the normal working of HJT in order to hide itself and renaming the .exe will get around this.

Also, run HJT and click on Open the Misc Tools section.

• Click Open Uninstall Manager...
• Click Save list... and save it to your Desktop.
• Copy and paste the file uninstall_list.txt into your next reply.

That was Normal Mode for your PC as opposed to Safe Mode - it affects the log that is created.

Download Combofix by sUBs from here and save it to your Desktop.

• Double click combo.exe to run it and follow the prompts.
• Please Note: This may require the PC to be rebooted so close any programs you have open before you start.
• When the tool has finished, it will produce a log C:\ComboFix.txt - copy and paste it into your next reply.
• Post a fresh HJT log as well.
• Let me know how the PC is behaving.

You are running an old version of Sun Java which needs updating:

• Go here and click on the Download button to the right of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u2.
• Accept the license agreement by clicking the appropriate radio button and then continue.
• Under Windows Platform - Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 2, click the Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language link.
• Go to Add/Remove Programs and remove any entries that refer to Java 2 Runtime Environment and then reboot your PC.
• Navigate to and delete the following folder, if it exists: C:\Program Files\Java.
• Finally double click the installation file that you downloaded earlier.

Run the PC for 24 hours and then do the following:

Run the following online scan: Panda ActiveScan.

• Please note that IE is required to run this scan.
• You will need to fill in the "Country, region, email address" information before you can download and install the ActiveX components necessary to run the scan.
• Decide whether you want to click the radio button underneath this part that says -
  "I do not want to receive marketing information from Panda Software and/or its International Representatives where applicable." - it's your choice!
• When you are asked to "Select a device to scan...", click on "My Computer".

When the scan has finished, click See Report > Save Report which by default will save the scan results as Activescan.txt in My Documents.

Copy and paste the result of the above scan into your next reply along with a fresh HJT log AND a description of how your PC is running.

Nothing of any real interest. Most of that junk is tracking cookies which aren't a big issue. While you can remove them all using a automated tool, such as ATF, you will lose any legitimate cookies that way.
You could delete them manually if you wished by going to the C:\Documents and Settings\Chris\Application Data\Earthlink\6.0\[email protected]\Cookies folder and removing those identified by Panda, or just run Spybot or Ad-Aware and let them deal with them.
Most of the rest are quarantined files that ComboFix has removed and aren't a threat. You can delete the contents of C:\qoobox\Quarantine to sort that out.
The last one is what is called a Potentially Unwanted Program or PUP for short. C:\WINDOWS\NirCmd.exe is part of CF, but it can also be used maliciously which is why it's flagged. You can delete this file as well.

I want you to run your PC as normal for a few days and when you are happy that everything is fine, do the following:

Disable System Restore,
Reboot your PC,
Re-enable System Restore,
Create a Restore Point - this will give a clean one should you need it in the future.

The reason for waiting is that if removing the malware has caused a problem, which it occasionally does, you can put your PC back to how it was before the fix. This will re-install the malware, but an infected PC is better than an expensive paperweight!
