IP routing is the process of sending data from a host on one network to a remote host on another network through a router, or routers. A router is either a specifically assigned computer or a workstation that's been configured to perform routing tasks.
For IP, if the router is fast switching, it load balances on a per-destination basis. If the router is process switching, it load balances on a per-packet basis. When one host attempts communication with another host on a different network, IP uses the host's default gateway address to deliver the packet to the corresponding router. When a route is found, the packet is sent to the proper network, then onward to the destination host. If a route is not found, an error message is sent to the source host.

I'm Geek U in MAlware and am pretty slow at that.

I would like to play around with networking when I get a chance or just need a break from Malware.

I have access to about 15 working Win XP desktops of various specifications.

I have 3-4 Win Xp LAptops that are still very usable/

I have a couple cheapie Win 7 netbooks too.

All that to say its a shame not to be able to get some real hands on Networking skills with those resources.

I am going to read this tutorial and try to get a better understanding of IP addressing and all the subnet etc etc topology.

I have Trainsignals CompTIa 2009 Training interactive Network 2009 course but it has taken the back seat to geek up.

What would it hurt to just run a Ethernet between two laptops or desktops and just start playing....if I munge the system I have images to restore with.

All in all I'm asking if someone knows a down and dirty...straight to the point website that might guide me in my journey
