I have been having several problems with RealPlayer 10 and thought someone might have a suggestion. When I am in RealPlayer 10 I can't use any of the methods to check for an update, I just receive a message that RealPlayer is unable to connect. I am online, I've disabled firewalls, I am using a standalone computer with Windows XP sp2 and Internet Explorer 6, I have run Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D, I have listed real.com as a trusted site in IE, my firewalls, etc., I have done a clean uninstall and reinstall as directed by Real, and I even tried doing a clean uninstall and reinstall of a previous version (RealOne version 2) and continue to have the same problems.

Not only can I not find any way to check for an update, but if I click on Add a New Device, or Customer Support under Help, a window opens briefly and then closes. I tried playing a Real file at Amazon and was told that I needed to update RealPlayer, but when the Real AutoUpdate window opens it says it is unable to connect. I cannot sign in because I am always told the service is unavailable and this is what happened when I installed RealOne version 2 and RealPlayer 10 after clean installs and was therefore not able to complete setup. I also have received many general errors when trying to play a clip from somewhere. I can play the test clips they have on their site fine, but I am still having these other problems.

I have contacted Real customer support and they suggested checking firewalls, etc., but I think there is something else going on since I have the same problem even when firewalls, anti-virus, etc. are disabled.

Any suggestions?

I saw you were having other problems from another log you posted in the browsers section. Let's see if you're clean. Check the Hijack This guide in my signature and follow the recommendations. Post the log back here and I'll take a look at it.

I had also posted in the Malware section with a topic of Adware.Gator found by Norton AV2005. I believe this is the link:
http://www.geekstogo...005-t18500.html

I posted my HJT log there after following the directions. I will paste a copy of it here too, but you might want to read the further information I posted in my Malware post for further clarification. I did discover that if I started RealPlayer without being connected to the internet, the windows with some of the Help and Tool options appeared but would say that I need to connect. Maybe Adware.Gator, my browser problems, and my RealPlayer problems have a connection of some kind. I had added some real.com websites as trusted sites to see if that helped with my RealPlayer problem or the problem I was having on the Real.com customer support forum.

Thank you for your time!

Here is a copy of my HJT log:

Does your computer take a long time to boot up. Next time, we'll get rid of some things on start up to quicken it up.

Close down all windows and make sure you're disconnected from the internet. Run Hijack This and put a check mark next to each one.

O4 - Global Startup: Updates from HP.lnk = C:\Program Files\Updates from HP\137903\Program\BackWeb-137903.exe
O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler V3.exe
O4 - Global Startup: MsnFixer.lnk = ?

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_02\bin\npjpi150_02.dll

O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://software-dl.r...ip/RdxIE601.cab

Reboot into safe mode (tap F8 lightly when it reboots) and find these files and delete them.

C:\WINDOWS\ALCXMNTR.EXE

Please scan your system with Ad-aware:
Ad-aware SE - Download - Home Page
  • If you have a previous version of Ad-Aware installed, during the installation of the new version you will be prompted to uninstall or keep the older version - be sure to uninstall the previous version.
  • After installing Ad-aware, you will be prompted to update the program and run a full scan. De-select all boxes so that it does not run.
  • Manually run "Ad-Aware SE Personal" and from the main screen Click on "Check for Updates Now".
  • Once the definitions have been updated:
  • Reconfigure Ad-Aware for Full Scan as per the following instructions:
    • Launch the program, and click on the Gear at the top of the start screen.
    • Under General Settings the following boxes should all be checked off: (Checked will be indicated by a green circle with a check mark in it, Un-Checked is a red circle with an X in it. If it is greyed out, those features are only available in the retail version.)
      • "Automatically save logfile"
      • Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal"
      • Safe Mode (always request confirmation)
      • Prompt to update outdated confirmation) - Change to 7 days.
    • Click the "Scanning" button (On the left side).
    • Under Drives & Folders, select "Scan within Archives"
    • Click "Click here to select Drives + folders" and select your installed hard drives.
    • Under Memory & Registry, select all options.
    • Click the "Advanced" button (On the left hand side).
    • Under "Shell Integration", select "Move deleted files to Recycle Bin".
    • Under "Log-file detail", select all options.
    • Click on the "Defaults" button on the left.
    • Type in the full url of what you want as your default homepage and searchpage e.g. http://www.google.com.
    • Click the "Tweak" button (Again, on the left hand side).
    • Expand "Scanning Engine" by clicking on the "+" (Plus) symbol and select the following:
      • "Unload recognized processes during scanning."
      • "Obtain command line of scanned processes"
      • "Scan registry for all users instead of current user only"
    • Under "Cleaning Engine", select the following:
      • "Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion."
      • "During removal, unload explorer and IE if necessary"
      • "Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot."
      • "Delete quarrantined objects after restoring"
    • Click on "Safety Settings" and select "Write-protect system files after repair (Hosts file, etc)"
    • Click on "Proceed" to save these Preferences.
    • Click on the "Scan Now" button on the left.
    • Under "Select Scan Mode, be sure to select "Use Custom Scanning Options".
  • Close all programs except ad-aware.
  • Click on "Next" in the bottom right corner to start the scan.
  • Run the Ad-Aware scan and allow it to remove everything it finds and then REBOOT - Even if not prompted to.
  • After you log back in, Ad-Aware may run to finalize the scan and remove any locked files that it may of found. Allow it to finish.
Please delete your temporary files. Double Click My Computer (WinXP: Navigate to Start --->My Computer)
You will see an icon representing your harddrive (most likely C: Drive) Right Click on the hard drive icon and click Properties at the
bottom of the fly out window. One the very first tab (General) you will see a button labeled "Disk Cleanup"...click that button.
Make sure the following are checked:
Downloaded Program Files
Temporary Internet Files and
Recycle Bin

Click OK and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic.

Another fellow posted the last couple of days in the 2000,xp forum, maybe? He was having some trouble with real player also. Have never used it. I'm more of a malware gal. :tazz:

After I place checkmarks in Hijack This, do I do anything else before I reboot into safe mode? I was thinking maybe I should click on Fix Checked, but that wasn't specified, so I haven't done anything yet.

Yes, my computer takes quite a while to boot up and I thought about making changes (although I would appreciate suggestions on how best to do this) but I didn't want to make any changes after beginning these posts. I didn't want to change too many variables.

I will wait for your reply about how to proceed after checkmarking in HJT and before booting in safe mode.

Thank you!

You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions to follow while you complete this procedure.

Please save Hijack This in a permanent folder (i.e. C:\HJT). This ensures backups are saved and accessible.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

O4 - Global Startup: Updates from HP.lnk = C:\Program Files\Updates from HP\137903\Program\BackWeb-137903.exe
O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler V3.exe
O4 - Global Startup: MsnFixer.lnk = ?

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_02\bin\npjpi150_02.dll

I followed your instructions and fix checked the five items in HJT, then booted in safe mode and deleted ALCMNTR.EXE then rebooted and ran Ad-Aware per your instructions (it found 4 cookies and several MRU entries and I deleted everything), I rebooted, then deleted my temporary files with Disk Cleanup. This is my new HJT log:

Oh, by the way, when I tried to click on a clickable smilie, nothing happened except I have a yellow triangle with exclamation mark in my IE progress window now. But if I click on show all and click on the smilies in the new window, it is entered in my message.

Do the same thing and put a check mark next to these following the same instructions.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE

The following are not necessarily spyware/malware, but we suggest you place a check mark next to the following entries, as these programs may be taking up system resources.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_02\bin\jusched.exe
(Description: Sun Java update scheduler. Checks for updates. Not necessary. Removing this entry will free up a small amount of system resources.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [hpsysdrv] c:\windows\system\hpsysdrv.exe
(Description: HP monitoring tool. Unnecessary. Remove this to free up some system resources.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HPHUPD05] c:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\{45B6180B-DCAB-4093-8EE8-6164457517F0}\hphupd05.exe
(Description: HP software update checker and wizard launcher.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HPHUPD05] c:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\{45B6180B-DCAB-4093-8EE8-6164457517F0}\hphupd05.exe
(Description: HP software update checker and wizard launcher.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HotKeysCmds] C:\WINDOWS\System32\hkcmd.exe
(Description: Intel hotkey applet. Unnecessary. Removing this will free up a small amount of system resources.)

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE
(Description: Microsoft Office startup assistant. Not necessary. Removing this entry will free up a significant amount of system resources.)

reboot and let me know how the system is running. :tazz:

I ran HJT and checked and fixed the items you listed, then I rebooted. I was able to sign in to RealPlayer which was great, but the media browser windows that open for Tools/Add a New Device and Help/Customer Support and Help/Product Survey open briefly and disappear as they had before. If I start RealPlayer while I am not connected to the internet, the window tells me I am not connected and gives me the option to retry - which works if I connect to the internet and then click the link to retry.

I also ran Norton AntiVirus 2005 on the file where it had been finding the Adware.Gator file and it is still finding it as I listed in my Malware post. I have not tried the fix tool again though.

I am still having problems when clicking on certain links and nothing happens. I still can't click on the clickable smilies, although I can choose to show all and click on one of them in the new window and it will be added. It seems like most of the problems I am having with links end up showing "java script: " type messages in the progress bar when I hover over them or click on them. Then I end up seeing an Error on page message. I don't know if these links that don't seem to work and the disappearing windows in RealPlayer (Real's browser windows opening) are connected. I found some information at windows.com about IE browser window problems:
http://support.micro...om/?kbid=281679
and wondered if I should follow the instructions on that link to see if that would solve some of those problems.

But before I do any of that, here is my latest HJT log:

It is late here and I will check back tomorrow to see if you have any further suggestions. Should I be concerned about Adware.Gator still showing up?

Thanks again for your patience and help.

I would try that advice from Microsoft. You look clean. Another option is getting rid of some junk. There's a program called ccleaner that cleans up unwanted items.

I followed the directions from the Microsoft link that I listed above and that has helped somewhat with the "disappearing windows" in RealPlayer. I am still having problems when I click on links, or the clickable smilies for example, that show javascript in the progress bar and then after clicking I receive an error the page message.

I have downloaded Ccleaner but wasn't sure if I would just use the defaults and click Run Cleaner, or if I should do something else before running it. If you have any suggestions, I will gladly take them.

Norton AV2005 is still detecting Adware.Gator:
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\HDPlugin1019.dll is a Adware threat.

I have run the fix gator till that was available in the link that they gave, but it says it is not finding Adware.Gator on my system, and therefore cannot fix it. How do I get rid of it, or should I repost this in the Malware section?

I will run Ccleaner once I find out the best way to do that.

Thanks again.

Is gator in add/remove programs? If so, remove it.

run the default in ccleaner. If you want to keep your cookies, make sure you keep that unchecked when you run the program.

Gator is not in my add/remove programs, and I don't find any Gain software (the Norton link mentioned to check for Gain in Add/Remove Programs) either. I installed SpywareBlaster to avoid future problems and will now run Ccleaner with the defaults and let you know what happens.

I ran Ccleaner and that took care of Windows and Application items, but when I scanned for Issues, I didn't select to fix any issues (Registry Integrity and File Integrity). I wasn't sure if I should select to fix any of the issues or not. Since running Ccleaner, the RealPlayer issue with disappearing windows seems to be back to the original problem.

I am still receiving lots of script errors on web pages (I think that is what the Error on page message in the progress bar is for) and didn't know if some of the issues that Ccleaner found would have anything to do with this. Even when I ran Panda to scan for viruses I never received the option to see a report (never saw a button even when there were viruses), and I didn't know if this would be related to script errors or not.

Thanks again for your help. I just wish I could figure out what is causing these web pages (in IE and Firefox) not to work correctly.

I always fix the issues -- haven't had any problems with it yet. I think it has a back-up :tazz: to reinstate. You can always go back to your restore points. Sounds like it wouldn't hurt anything. I would turn system restore back on if you ahve turned it off.
