Thank you for all the replies.

As usually, hubby is out of town and I am not sure I am qualified to find off this info.

I tried to download the CPU thingy on his computer to get the info....but I was not successful. And I did not want to open anything I felt uncomfortable doing on my own. This new Vista system asks you "a thousand questions" (at least it seems so to me) and really builds a level of second guessing that I am not comfortable with.

I have not found the Power info...but I found the following:

The Compaq unit has:

Imtel ® Pentium ® D CPU 2.80 GHz .99 GB RAM
Intel ® 82945G Express Chipset Family

Intel ® 82801 PCI Bridge 244E

Interface Controller 1CH7DH

Again still no info on the Power. The unit is placed in a cabinet and I don't want to "disconnect" it.

Hubby just found out he willl be out of town for two weeks.....

so...if it is ok with y'all...I will put this request for info on hold until he is hone to help me with this.

My son is still playing it every day....for hours on end!!! Yesterday, he asked me to be sure to "Thank" my friends at GeeksToGo for your assistance. He thinks it is so cool that other folks love this game as much as he does. Of course, he thinks you are all teenagers like himself. And "at heart" ..... we all are!! :) He knows that you all gave me the confidence I needed to make this purchase for him. I knew we would not have all the maxed out graphics....but I was afraid of overloading the computer. Once I knew that would not happen, his year long request was granted. And again, he is grateful to you all.

I will post again when I get all the info you need.

Thanks again for everything.

Alright, on hold is fine, but if you're up to the task, here's what you can do. If you don't feel comfortable with any of it, then by all means, wait for your husband to come back, no worries! Also, for step two, if your computer is new, there might be a sticker on the back which says something like "Warranty Void if sticker is broken", so perhaps it would be best not to try this step if that's the case.

1) Items in blue which are underlined are clickable to give more information about the process
Download and install Everest Home Edition
Run the program and then click on Report up the top.
Click Next, select System Summary Only and click Next, select Plain Text and click Finish.
Copy the second section of the report (Summary) and paste it into your next reply.

2) Shut down your computer so it is completely turned off. Disconnect the power cable from the back - we're not going to be touching anything, but it's just a good safety precaution. With a screwdriver, undo the screws on the back of the tower to be able to take off the side. You should then be able to see all the lovely internal components, including (hopefully) a sticker on a box, similar to the picture I posted above. Copy down (or take a close-up photo of) the sticker information. Then put the side back on and screw it firm, connect your power cable and start your computer up again. Post the sticker information into your next reply as well.

Hope this helps :)

Hold is fine, if it works im sure your son can live with it for a little while.

If your son is really into flying or aviation depending on what country your from he might want to look into starting an organisation that fosters those interests when i was younger I was a cadet in my local Air Training Corps squadron and that's great for teenagers with an interest of aviation they teach you about aviation and you get plenty opportunities for flying which most people could never afford to do. My cadet years where certainly great, although the experience varies on the nation here in the UK its pretty good very much about the aviation and building confidence and skills in cadets.

Thanks for the info. That is not an option due to my son's autism. BIL is a Black Hawk helicopter pilot (Lt Col) and has let our son sit in several helicopters. He loves all aircraft.

We get to travel a lot and our son loves it when it involves flying. In fact, the British Isles is our next planned overseas trip. Hubby's ancestory is Welsh....mine Scot/Irish. We are in the preliminary planning stages. Probably next summer if everything works out.

I will be back when hubby is home to help!!

Thanks again from all of us!!

Hey gang...back again. Let's start with the Power....

Hubby pulled the side off the computer and I knew immediately we were in trouble.

We did not have the nice HUGE power panel I had seen pictures of. It was this tiny little thing that probably can't power a Christmas tree light bulb....must less a graphics card.

This is what we found:

BESTEC Model ATX-300-12Z
Input: 100-127V - 7A, 200-240V - 4a 50/60HZ
BSTATX - 300 -12zEDR
Output 300W Max

I already know that I want the best graphics card that $150.00 can buy. I don't really want to spend much more than that if I can help it, because the Yolk "thingy" will be $150.00...and no telling if we will have to add memory ....

The good news is that a friend of ours said that any time our son wanted to fly in a REAL simulator at the Louisville airport...to just give him a call. We go up there about once a year (hubby is on the Foundation Board of Southern Seminary) and now all we have to do it talk our son into getting "inside the unit". This is a problem for AS kids because they don't like being confined...at least ours doesn't it. If he gets past that hurdle...he can fly in a real simulator....which would be a hoot.

I will forward the "guts" of his computer as soon as I figure out how. Hubby wasn't much help in that department. So I am on my own ....

Thanks guys!!(and gals if applicable)

Good news - this system has a PCI-Express x16 slot for the graphics card upgrade :)

Please post back your complete budget for computer upgrades, including a video card and power supply - is that the $150?. You're right about the christmas tree lights! I'm sure you can understand why it's so important to have a quality PSU!

If your budget changes, let us know, otherwise here are some suggestions I quickly found for around that price range, to give you an idea:

Nvidia 7900GS Graphics Card $119.99 ($10 rebate brings it to $109.99)
This graphics card is a known good performer, there are several DX10 cards in the same price range, but this DX9 card will give you better performance.

Antec True Power Trio Power Supply $89.99 ($30 rebate brings it to $59.99 - a bargain!)
Notice that it's not just about how many watts, although 550W is good here. It also has plenty of amps spread across three 12v rails (18A x 3), which is important to ensure your graphics card can get what it needs. Also, the efficiency factor is over 80%, which means more power and less heat = more reliablility.

This probably will take you a little bit over your budget, but they are good choices. Also you will have to pay it all upfront and send off an application to get the rebate back, but once it's all done you should come to $169.98. Are you going to be putting the upgrades in yourself (you or hubby) or taking parts to the local shop?

Hang tight and some others can make suggestions as well, someone might find a better deal for you. I'll PM a few of the system building and upgrading helpers to check out this thread, so we can get the best deals/parts for you! Also for any helpers reading, does anyone know if Compaq-Presario computers use different power supplies (i.e. non-standard)?

:)

Hey guys,

Hubby just gave me the okay to spend whatever we need to get it done right. We will not be installing ourselves but we have a great pc shop around the corner that I trust now that I know what to ask for. Thanks guys and we will watch for other suggestions.

I don't recommend buying the parts from your local computer shop. If you feel unconfortable installing the hardware then buy it off newegg from the links FPV provided and then take it to the shop for installation. The prices of those items would be much more expensive retail in a store. If you do end up having to buy from a store than you might find the simular performing X1950pro cheaper: http://www.newegg.co...N82E16814102061. Other than the card that FPV found the X1950pro cards typically cost less.

I'm running on a moderately customized system.

Intel Pentium 4
2.60GHz processor
1 GB of RAM
80 GB Hard Drive
240 GB Hard Drive
ATI Radeon 9550 / X1050 Series

And I could play without and problems at all. Though it takes quite some time to load the maps before the game can begin. I didn't buy a yoke, so I had it removed off my computer. This game is definitely worth the buy, its not even a game! xD

Thanks so much. I did not think of that. Come to think of it...a good friend has a son who worked there for years before going to Nashville to work for a State Senator. perhaps he will come over and assist!!!

Side note: There is no way I can convey how much this information has helped our son and how much he truly appreciates you folks. Every morning, he asks....how are our "geeks" doing today? He does not understand exactly what you do, but he knows that without you...he would not be enjoying the thrill of flight every day (even before we get all these goodies!!!)

Just know you have made one special young man VERY happy!! (and Mom and Dad too)

PS: I just noticed you are in Louisville. We were just there last week. Hubby is on the Foundation Board for Southern Seminary and we attended Heritage Week. LOVE the area, wish we could get transferred there!!!!

Thanks again!!!

Better yet, ask your local shop to price match the iteams. Often, if you don't buy the parts at the store the store won't install them.

If the local shop or your friend is unable to do it, usually you can get local repair shops to do that sort of thing as well.

Edit: Louisville is a nice place to live. Lots of nice parks and historic sites to see that many of us locals neglect.

Just the fact you say thanks is good enough for us, half the time we help and because we fixed their problem, they don't bother coming back online to say "it worked, thanks!" We enjoy helping :)

What exactly do we do? Well, we are ordinary people. We have jobs, study, family, hobbies (of which computers is foremost :)) and other such things in life. You can tell him that I live in Australia. He's getting help from all over the world!

And yes, games make me happy too :) At the moment, I'm playing Oblivion, Age of Empires 2, V8 Supercars 2 (Car Racing Game). I want to upgrade my system to be able to run Colin McRae: DiRT, that's on the cards in the near future. I've never played a flight simulator game before, so if your son says it's that good, I just might have to try it :)

My son got so excited when I told him you were from Australia. A dear friend of ours used to work for Carnival Cruise Lines. He started in the gift shop and worked his way up to Assistant Cruise Director before he left the company. He was from Australia. Last time we talked, he was living in Canada. We cruised with him several times and he was always so much fun. Our son thought he was a hoot!! So he left a great impression of Australia on all of us.
