Linksys and AirTech

I have a Linksys WRT54G wireless router connected to my base station upstairs. when i go downstairs with my laptop that has 802.11G in it, it connects for awhile then disconnects. It does that 3 or 4 times by changing the IP address and the subnet mask to incorrect ones, then it changes to the correct ones by itself and stays connected for a long time.
I don't know why it does that so i'm looking into a wireless range extender and hopefully that will fix the problem. But, the only one i found online is an AirPlus DWL800-AP+Enhanced 2.4GHz wireless range extender for 802.11B. I know 802.11G is faster than 802.11B and I know they're compatible but will that slow down the data transfer speed to another downstairs computer, which has an a wireless access card installed and is a little bit farthur away from the router, and also the laptop?
Also, will an AirPlus unit work with a Linksys router?

Adding an 802.11b component to a network will slow data transfer for all the wireless devices attached to that network. You'll need an 802.11g repeater.
