I am a new user at "GEEKS TO GO" and have a couple of questions before I feel comfortable about sending a "HijackThis" Log File.

I found your website and followed the steps for removing MALWARE up to the point of running "HijackThis".

My first question is about your instructions for running "HijackThis". The instructions state: "If you have anything disabled by MSConfig, please re-enable it before scanning to post."

I'm afraid if I enable everything listed in the start tab the computer will lock-up before it can finish booting into Windows.

The computer in question is a Compaq Presario 1200 Laptop running Windows ME. Over the 3 or 4 years I have had this laptop it has been used for a number of different functions and has had many programs added and deleted. As a result I have had to uncheck numerous startup item that are not needed with the current configuration. Also some required items (ie, NPROTECT, MS Fast Find, Load Power Profile) are duplicated in the Start list.

When I began the attempt to clean up this computer it would routinely crash if I opened more than one program. I checked the System Resources after a fresh reboot and it would be 60% to 65% with nothing running. After unchecking several unnessesary start list items and getting rid of some "Ad Ware" I get resources of @72% after a fresh reboot.

The computer will run now but I still feel there must be additional "Malware" or unneeded items running in the backround.

Please advise what my next step should be.

Thank you,

Jerry

Hi Jerry! Welcome to Geeks to Go!

It does not appear to be malware causing your problem. I actually see a few resource hogs that are not required on startup. But before I make any suggestions on programs to remove from Startup, please run this online virus scan:
ActiveScan

Copy the results from ActiveScan and paste them here.

There is no to need to apologize! You waited patiently for a while, I'm sorry we missed your thread!

So here is what I need you to do:

First, download, install, and run CleanUp! (so we can get rid of those viruses in your temporary Internet Files!) *NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders. If you have anything in a temp folder, backup it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running Cleanup! Your desktop icons may blink on and off while running - this is completely normal!

Please read these instructions carefully

*Download Killbox by Option^Explicit.
*Save it to your desktop.
*Double-click on Killbox.exe to start the program.
*In the killbox program, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*In the field labeled Full Path of File to Delete enter the file paths listed below ONE AT A TIME (EXACTLY as it appears, please double check to make sure! I would just copy each file path and paste it in the field):

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\rules.dat
C:\WINDOWS\NDNuninstall4_34.exe

Press the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it after each one. When it asks if you would like to delete on reboot, press the YES button, when it asks if you want to reboot now, press the NO button. Do this after each one until you have entered the LAST file path I have listed above. After that LAST file path has been entered press the YES button at both prompts so that your computer restarts.

After your computer reboots, please download Ad-Aware - install, and update After installing Ad-aware, you will be prompted to update the program and run a full scan. De-select all boxes so that it does not run a scan. Manually run "Ad-Aware SE Personal" and from the main screen Click on "Check for Updates Now". Do NOT run it yet!

Reconfigure Ad-Aware for Full Scan as per the following instructions:
In the Ad-Aware main window, click on the gear icon at the top of the screen to open the preferences window. In the "General" window, make sure the following options are selected:
1) Automatically save log-file
2) Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
3) Safe Mode (always request confirmation)

Click the "Scanning" button on the left-hand side and make sure the following options are selected:
1) Scan within archives
2) Scan active processes
3) Scan registry
4) Deep scan registry
4) Scan my IE Favorites for banned URLs
5) Scan my Hosts file

Please also click on "Select drives & folders to scan" and select your hard drive(s). Then click the "Advanced" button on the left-hand side and make sure all the options under "Log-file Detail Level" are selected. Next, click the "Tweak" button on the left-hand side. Click on "Scanning Engine" and make sure the following options are selected:
1) Unload recognized processes & modules during scanning
2) Obtain command line of scanned processes
3) Scan registry for all users instead of current user only

Click on "Cleaning Engine" and make sure the following options are selected:
1) Always try to unload modules before deletion
2) During removal, unload Explorer and IE if necessary
3) Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot
4) Delete quarantined objects after restoring

Finally, click on "Safety Settings" and make sure the following options are selected:
1) Automatically select problematic objects in results lists
2) Write-protect system files after repair (Hosts file, etc)

Click on "Proceed" to save the preferences. Then please click the "Start" button on the bottom left side to begin a scan. Select "Use custom scanning options" and then click "Next". Ad-Aware will then scan for malware. When it is finished, make sure any objects listed in RED are selected and click "Next" to remove the objects.

Reboot your computer and post a new HijackThis log along with the results from Ad-Aware

:tazz: It looks like we are making progress. Thank you for your time this is a great service. I will look into the possibility of going to Geek U. This is something I would enjoy doing if the limited free time I have would be helpful!

That's no problem! I'll keep an eye out for your post.

"Fixing" these items in HiJackThis will not remove them from your computer, it just removes them from starting when your computer starts. The below items are a few resource hogs that may be causing your computer to be so slow. If you find that you would rather a particular item to load, then we can put it back easily!! ;)

Run HiJackthis. Place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Norton SystemWorks] "C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\cfgwiz.exe" /GUID {05858CFD-5CC4-4ceb-AAAF-CF00BF39736A} /MODE CfgWiz
Configuration Wizard for Norton SystemWorks - not required and a resource Hog.

O4 - Startup: Microsoft Find Fast.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\FINDFAST.EXE
Indexing program for MS Office not required and definitely a resource hog. Causes slowing and freezing.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TaskMonitor] C:\WINDOWS\taskmon.exe
Not required - big resource hog.

Reboot your computer and let me know if it's running any better. :tazz:

:tazz: Hi,

It's monday and I'm back. I ran HJT and removed the three items you listed. After a restart I checked Sys Resources and it is 76%, that still seems low for a machine with a fresh restart and no programs running. FYI I also checked the MSCONFIG Startup list and there are 29 items unchecked but still in the list. Should I try to do anything with them?

Thank You again.

Jerry

As your log is right now, there isn't anything else to remove - you don't have enough memory to run all the programs you have! Can you go to msconfig now and select normal startup and post the log to see what else we can remove from startup?

:tazz: I did not know a Windows sys would boot-up with sys resources as low as 43%!!! That is what I had when I selected Normal in msconfig.

Here is the HJT log that I got.

Do you need QUICKIDRIVE on startup?

Ok here are the items I suggest removing from startup:

Run HiJackThis and place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Tour] C:\WINDOWS\wincool.exe /30m <- pops up to prompt you to play a ME video. Definitely doesn't need to be on startup.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [InCD] C:\Program Files\ahead\InCD\InCD.exe <-Can be run manually.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QUICKIDRIV] c:\program files\quickidrive tools1.1\quickidrive.exe sys_auto_run C:\PROGRAM FILES\QUICKIDRIVE TOOLS1.1 <- Leave if you need it, but I don't know why it would need to be on startup.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CreateCD] C:\PROGRA~1\ADAPTEC\EASYCD~1\CREATECD\CREATECD.EXE -r <-Available via Start > Programs.

O4 - Startup: Office Startup.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA.EXE <-Not needed, big-time resource hog!

O4 - Startup: Microsoft Find Fast.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\FINDFAST.EXE <- Not needed.

O4 - Startup: CreataCard Gold 2 Forget Me Not Reminders.lnk = C:\Program Files\CreataCard\Gold\fmrmd32.exe <-You don't need reminders on startup if you ask me!

Reboot, post a new HiJackThis log and let me know how it goes!

:tazz: I fixed the 7 items you listed, I also "fixed" the following 4 additional items and the sys resources were still very low so ( 58% ):

eaclean.exe > I never use the easy access buttons
QWDLL.EXE > seldom use Quicken on the laptop
loadcurrentpwrscheme > it was listed twice
opware32.exe > seldom use my scanner with laptop

Also wondered if it would be safe to eliminate these:

QDFastandsafe
kb891711

Here is HJT log with the current changes.

I'm running pretty close to you at 51% LOL With all of those programs you have on ME (with probably not too much memory I'm sure), we're not going to get it down to where you are only using 20% or anything like that!

QDFastandsafe - If you don't need it on startup then remove it.
kb891711 - Security update which is known to cause problems in ME, but remove from startup at your own risk!

Personally, I think we've done quite well! You went from freezing when normal startup was selected because there was too much stuff to normal startup running FINE, but just not as good as you would like . :tazz:
