Hi sonobby1.

The answer is "no".

However, you can uninstall the Windows Installer and then reinstall it.

Windows Installer 3.1 (v2)

Hi sonobby1.

Windows Installer is a hotfix/update downloaded when a PC has XP SP2 on it and Automatic Updates is enabled.

The program is listed in "Add or Remove Programs" as "Windows Installer 3.1 (KB893803)".

Get to Add or Remove Programs by:

Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs

Do you have XP Service Pack 2 installed and Automatic Updates turned on ?

Open Windows Explorer and right-click on My Computer. You should see this window.

Get XP SP2 by any of these ways:

XP SP2 on CD mailed to you I'm not sure MS is still offering this.

Download from MS Site This is a 272MByte file !

MS Developer's Network-Install Version This version has a different installation method.

Be sure to follow its installation instructions carefully. It is not automatic like the SP2 disc that gets mailed to you from MS using the first link listed.

hi back again wincrazy, well that failed also. it installed for about 15 minutes then it said access denied.
what you have to realise ive had major probs for a good year now, so ive tried everything in the book, read so many forums etc. when i think about sercice pack 2 now i actually have the cd here, that didnt work either when i tried to install it. sorry but when you try so many different things over the year you forget what youve got, and what youve tried.
so as a recap this is my probs that ive tried to sort,
on a restart it takes about 10 minutes for my comp to load to desk top
but it always opens a system 32 folder which i cant stop
(tried everything to stop that also)
i cant access my windows explorer, if i can its briefly then it closes
no windows installer
no excell spread sheet
wont let me get it again
obviously no live messenger cos i cant install it
i know that at the end of the day i have to do a xp repair but i cant even do that cos ive tried that many times
reason for that is it asks for an admin password, which i dont have.
dont say put in blank cos ive tried that lots of times lol.
ive said in an earlier post that i think the shop i bought it from set an admin password, but they have gone bust , and i cant get in touch with them to find the password.
i also understand that they wont help me find the pasword as i could be hijacking someones computer, but im not
so basically im screwed lol
i dont really want to do a fornmat cos ive got loads of stuff on here that i need
think ill just throw the thing on the floor and claim insurance lol
laters

At this point I strongly suggest that you bite the bullet. Your XP installation is too severly damaged to work with it anymore.

- Back up your important files to CD, DVD, another physical hard drive, etc.

- Reinstall XP

Be sure to have all the drivers for your PC or motherboard on CD first.
