Hi. I'm running Windows XP Pro SP2. I just reformatted my computer because I was having this exact same problem which eventually progressed to not being able to boot windows at all.

When I boot up it makes it to the Windows XP Pro screen with the bar scanning back and forth. It goes for a few seconds and then freezes. I have to restart and then my Safe mode screen comes up that gives me the options to start in safe mode, last known good config or normally. Once I click normally it boots up. This happens everytime that I start the computer or restart the computer.

I have a shuttle AK38 N Motherboard. I can't install the driver for a Via Bus Master Drivers. I don't know if this is the problem or not, but I can't get that driver to install on Windows XP.

Anyone now what is happening?

Are you using a video card or an onboard video. It sounds like a corupt video driver.
Right click on my computer>properties>Hardware>device manager>click on the + sign next to display adapter.
Any yellow or red marks?
Right click on the adapter and choose update driver. does this help?

I seen that when I was searching for solutions before I came to this forum. I have a Geforce 4 MX440 (old computer). Device manager says everything is working properly and I updated drivers. I haven't been to Nvidia website though. Should I go there looking for another driver that maybe windows xp didn't recognize? Thanks for the suggestion and help.

Download that and run it it should find your video card and link you to the updates

I had this problem once. It may be because of one of the following problems :

1. Windows XP OS corruption
2. RAM Problem
3. Display Card Problems

Since you had just installed Win XP , the first option should be ruled out. Replace
your exisiting memory and try. If it doest not solve the probem, replace your display
card and try.
