boots up the computer it will not get past the Windows XP screen before restarting.
I swapped out battery, check fan, ran virus SW

Got your XP cd handy?

If so, use it to boot to the Recovery Console and type in chkdsk /r and press enter.

Let it finish then close out of the Recovery Console, remove the cd and reboot.

I seem to recall that this was one of the models that had a bad capacitor problem. You might want to look at the mainboard and power conversion module, near the CPU and see if any of the little cylindrical things have bulging tops. On some of these models Dell will replace the circuit board and power module out of warranty.
