the game isn't vista compatible. Try disabling the firewall on vista, disabling tcp-ip version 6 in networking properties, and see if that helps. As a last resort, you can try running the game in compatibility mode.

Thanks,

I am having a lot of trouble running Starcraft on my vista laptop, I run it in compatability mode but then I get a message that says it cant read an important file, possibly because the CD is not in (when I am sure it is and the CD is working) I read on another forum that somebody fixed this by downloading a patch but I dont know where or if it was for vista or starcraft. please help.

thanks for the link, I tried downloaded the patch fine but I still get the same problem, the exact message is, "starcraft is unable to read a required file. Your starcraft CD may not be in the CDROM drive. Please ensure that the Starcraft disk is in the CDROM drive and press OK". any ideas?

My copy of regular starcraft is the original while my brood war is a copy, but I get the same message no matter which version. I suppose I could try cleaning the disks but in case that doesn't help how do I fix the install (and properly clean the CDs for that matter)?

well cleaning you have many options you could go buy the materials for it or you could go for a home conventional method i don't know if its safe but i do it with anything that isn't my blueraydisks take some dish soap and put a bit on the back and take a non scratchy towel or rag or napkin or something run it under light water and clean it wait till it dries before placing in your computer for proper install well you'd have to uninstall and install but you may not be able to install it again if there is a problem with the disk so its kinda risky

I've done this before using toothpaste instead of dish soap, apparently there's some chemical in the toothpaste that's the same as in the cd cleaning kits...

Either way it is risky...
