Hi, I am having some problems with my main desktop PC. It is an athlon 64 3400, 512MB DDR 400, asrock k8 760gx, with onboard mirage graphics, 2 80GB HD's, running XP pro. Here is the problem. About 2 weeks ago the onboard graphics started to get a little funny, the display wouold just mess up and stuff. So I bought an asus 9400v (only a temporary solution until I graduate in a few months, but for now I have no money!). Put this in and then windows started to freeze after anout 5 seconds after boot. Figured it must be a driver error or something, an sure enough, re-installed XP with newer drivers and it worked okay...for a week.

Now when I say it worked okay, I mean after the driver conflict I had to reset the machine a few times, and as such it started to develop a habbit of only actually doing anything about 1 in every 4 times. I mean, the BIOS did not even start or anything, rather the monitor reported 'no signal' and went to standby. When it eventually did do something the BIOS would report either 'BIOS checksum wrong' or 'BIOS is bad', in either cases I had to change the settings before boot. So by going back to a previous version of the BIOS it worked for a week.

Now the problem has come back and it is worse. It just froze and then I pressed reset and nothing - just 'no signal' reported. Occasionally now (1 in every 10) times the BIOS will start, report that it the settings need changing and then it tries to boot into XP. After the green bars get to about their 3'rd appearance they just stop and the system hangs. I did just get it to boot into safe mode, but that was after the 4th try, and nothing since.

If anyone has any ideas or advice they would be gratefully appreciated.

I have been looking around this board and noticed that some similair problems have had suggestions to use a different graphics card. Let me just say that the same thing happens when i take the AGP card out (although the onbaord graphics was the original problem, but at thought at least something would happen).

Further to this, two of the times I can remember it freezing following the installation of the drivers was after a video had been paused for more than 5 minute. Could this have any bearing on the matter?

Also, the computer will usually at least post if the lights on the keyboard come on, if they dont come on there is no chance.
