Un-able to get pictures off a CD

I just installed a new computer system and had pictures saved on a CD from my old computer. My old computer operated on Windows 98 and the pictures wre downloaded from a digital camera, then saved onto a CD. The program I used to save the pictures onto the Cd was HP Photosmart Essentials. My New computer system uses Windows XP, and I have an updated version of HP Photosmart Essentials. I can't get the pictures off the CD.....
Anyone have a suggestion? :o

were you ever able to get pictures off the cd after you created it?
