My son's computer has limited or no connectivity and can not access the internet. I called Roadrunner (cable) and they ran me through the ipconfig /release/renew with no luck. We rebooted, tried to reinstall the modem - nothing. There are 2 others computers connecting to the modem (wireless) just fine. He can also connect his xbox ethernet cord to the modem and play live just fine. Do you think I may just need a new Ethernet Card?
The error I get when trying to renew is:
An error occurred while renewing interface local area connection 2: An operation was attempted on someting that is not a socket.

Please help - I appreciate it.

Welcome to Geeks to Go.

I do not believe its a hardware fault. I would go and download Winsock and run that first. Then reboot and try again.

Let us know what the results are good or bad.

Thanks

If you have an external hard drive or a thumb drive you could copy it over using that or burning a cd and using that. If not we can figure it out.

How is his computer setup. Is there a router or just a cable modem or switch or something?

On the computer that works please go to Start -> Run -> type "cmd" without quotes hit enter
In the dos screen type "ipconfig/all >C:\ipconfig.txt" without quotes and hit enter.
Open My Computer and go to your C drive, there should be a text file named ipconfig.txt, copy and paste that into here.

Thanks

I would go onto the machine that does not work and set a static IP address.

To do that go to Start -> Control Panel -> Network Connections

Right click on the local area connection that you are trying to use and click Properties

In the middle box scroll down to Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) highlight and click Properties

On the next screen click the first button that says Use the Following IP Address

Now in the IP Address box put: 192.168.0.13
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1

Leave the second button to Obtain DNS server automatically.

Click ok out of all the screens, there may be a slight delay while it sets it, then try to connect to the internet. If that works then go to Winsock. Let me know if it works.

Thanks

Ok, I got connected but Internet Explorer goes to that error page and will not load. DNS error.

You stated to:
Leave the second button to Obtain DNS server automatically.

This option was not available for me to click on. The 2nd bullet was checked with blanks for the DNS and Alternate DNS and the option to allow automatic was grayed out - could not click on it.

Other suggestions to get on line to download winsock?

Go back into where you set the IP settings and under the DNS portion put:
65.24.7.3

65.24.7.6
