Cannot view pdf files

First the operating system is Windows 2003 server sp2, and we are using Adobe Reader 8.1.

If we open a pdf file, parts of the words are blacked out. If we click on or highlight the blacked out section, sometimes we can read the words. If we print the file it prints perfectly normal. Any ideas about this?
