You have a corrupt/failed installation hanging in the registry, resoultion instructions are here http://support.insta...ticleid=Q107731

Download the windows installer sdk from MS and follow the instructions with the readme section. If that does not clear your problem then come back

Resolution B is where to look

To clear the problem you can run MSIzap with the P switch, "msizap.exe p".

To do this download and run http://www.microsoft...;displaylang=en

Then go START > RUN and paste in msizap.exe p

The problem was caused by incorrectly terminating the installation and there is now a registry key stuck.. While you try the above I will try to find the registry key

If the above does not work then..

WARNING these fixes are designed for this user only and may cause damage if run on an uninfected machine

First we must back up the entire registry. To do this

REGISTRY BACKUP

Go START > RUN and type in REGEDIT then press your enter key.
When Regedit is open ensure that 'my computer' is highlighted in the left pane.
Go to FILE and select EXPORT.
Check the 'all' button at the bottom of the screen to backup the entire registry.
You will need to select a location to save the exported registry (it will be saved as a single file) I would suggest the Desktop
Choose the FILE NAME as Oldreg
In the drop down box called SAVE AS TYPE select registration files (*.reg).
Then click SAVE
This will create a file on your desktop called Oldreg.reg Posted Image

REGISTRY FIX

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Installer\InProgress]

Next you will need to create the repair registry fix to do that copy and paste ALL of the above in the quote box to a notepad file. Ensure there is no space above the REGEDIT4.
Then in notepad go to FILE > SAVE AS and in the dropdown box select SAVE AS TYPE to ALL FILES
Then in the FILE NAME box type fix.reg
This will create a fix.reg file on your desktop Posted Image

To use this file you will need to right click the icon and select merge, accept the warning if it appears and you are done.

Try this

Prefetch is clickable for more information

Click start then run, type prefetch then press enter, click edit then select all, (all files will highlight), right click any file, click delete, confirm

Click start then all programmes, accessories, system tools to run disc clean up

Reboot

Click start then all programmes, accessories, system tools to run defragmenter

Download, install and run
Tune Up 2007 Trial

Run Tune Up disc clean up

Run Tune Up registry clean up

Disable the anti virus programme then click Optimize and Improve to run Reg Defrag, the screen will lose colour during the process which can take a few minutes and then needs a reboot

Check the anti virus programme is running

Those will have cleared the drive of obsolete software errors

These are suggestions for making the most of the free trial

Click optimize and improve then system optimizer to optimize the computer, select computer with an internet connection from the drop down menu, this also requires a reboot

After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to accelerate downloads, select the speed just above your actual connection speed, this requires a reboot.

After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to run system advisor

Once again, I could not install the recommended program. After deleting the files you told me to, running disk cleanup, and running the disk defragmenter, I downloaded Tune Up 2007 Trial and when I tried to install it, once again, it failed due to Error 1500 - "an installation is already in progress." Is there any way to fix this problem without installing something because I'm pretty sure, based on past experience, that I can't install ANYTHING. Thank you so much for helping me.

Go to control panel and select ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS
When this opens select SERVICES
In the window that opens Scroll down the right hand pane until you find the following

Windows Installer

Right click the first one and select PROPERTIES
In the startup type DROP DOWN box select MANUAL
On the bottom of the page will be a STOP button select that

Reboot and see if you can install tune up utilities now
