If I sort that folder (system32) by date last modified, the recent ones are the nasty icons, the param32.dll which was the day of the attack (yesterday)

Hi Lori,
You should be the HijackThis Expert.
Are all three present?
param32.dll
guninst.exe
popup_bl.dll
Go into Safe mode and killbox as many as you have on your system.
Delete all icons. RUN HJT and get rid of Hotoffers
Please post new log.

Hi Lori,
I'm not finished with you LOL.
Did you delete or just move them?
Look at your HJT log, did you or your administrator or a program like spybot set the restrictions present in the 06's? If not, delete them with HJT.
Please answer.

All I did was remove the icons and the one file I mentioned earlier into another folder, ran HJT and stopped it with the "fix it" thingy, rebooted and I'm clean as a whistle - or am I?

Have to tell you I was cleaning my office during the many reboots of the past 48 hours and at one point today I must have knocked the plug our of my router.... suddenly I couldn't get online. Total panic. I booted about 10 times - no change. Finally noticed the plug out of the wall lol

Hi Lori,
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
Are you going to try and delete them? If not do the following now, please. If you delete them, do these procedures after the delete. I am writing this saga up in the Case History section for others to hopefully benefit by.
If nothing else, do #1 and #2 to clean your system.
Congratulations, your new log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN
There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:
1. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:
TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1. Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
2. Left click on "System Restore Tab"
3. Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
4. Left click on "Apply"
TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1.Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
2.Click on "Apply"
2. Cleanup the leftovers. Download CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
3. Finally, Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.
Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:
I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
So how did I get infected in the first place? (My Favorite)

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:
I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
- Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
- Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
- How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
- How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
- IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
- MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
- Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
So how did I get infected in the first place? (My Favorite)

FYI I have used ad-aware for years but when all this happened it would not work. I reinstalled it a number of times and it just would not work - it would hang.....interesting eh? You can see from my logs I downloaded SO MANY spyware programs this weekend it was crazy. I happened upon you guys by googling and I've already told a pile of others about you - too bad it was too late for my co-worker who got the same sort of thing and had to format her drive.
