no windows or net sounds

hi all
i hope someone can help
for some reason i have lost sounds ie startup shutdown aol sounds ?
i do however have sound from windows mp11
and microsoft sam !
i have done nothing to the pc no new software or updated drivers
i have re installed my sound blaster software as a last resort but no change
what is strange is when in control pannel / sounds and audio devices then sounds tab
sound scheme is on windows default when i click on a sound in the feild below i.e exit windows the play button will not work
i have done all the normal things nothing is muted and as i say wmp and cd playback is working ok
any help would be realy great

launch Registry Editor (click Start > Run, type regedit and press [Return]). Click HKEY_USERS and make sure there’s a (Default) value with (value not set) as its Data. If this isn’t the case, right-click (Default) and select Delete to recreate the key. If it does have this key, open HKEY_USERS and check each of the keys beginning with S-1-5-21 for the same value.

hi there i have done that in the righthand plane there is a .... ab (default) i try to delete this but it says unable to delete the specified values
in the HKEY-USERS i found S-1-5-21-1614895754-842925246-839522115-1003
and S-1-5-21-1614895754-842925246-839522115-1003_Classes

hi all just to let you know this problem has now been sorted
after hours of serching i found a small program that repairs broken codecs and has a area that is desiged to repair loss of windows sounds i ran the program that found 19 faulty or broken codecs
i done a restart and all now ok here is the link to the program for you to have a look at or to use
