Hello ClarkClark, Welcome to the Geeks to go Forums. My Name is Jfcap, and I will be helping you clean your system.

You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions incase you need to boot into safe mode, where your internet will be unavailable.

Lets get started!

Right click Here and select Save As to download WinHelp2002's DelDomains.inf. Please save the file somewhere you can find it like on the desktop. To run the inf file, right click on it and select Install.

Next, go here and run at least two of the online scans, allow them to delete whatever they find:

TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done.

You are running HijackThis from its zipped archive; please create a new folder for HiJackThis and unzip the program into the folder. It is very important you do this before anything else!

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Also when i tried to delete dxtskres.exe, a message kept coming up saying search must be closed and then it would close the search so i couldnt delete that file. The 2 scans worked fine. heres my new hijack this. thanks a million for helping.

ClarkClark,

Lets try Spybot and AdAware, the instructions on how to download and run these scans are listed below.

AdAware
Run Ad-Aware with the latest update.
  • Download the latest version of Ad-Aware (Ad-Aware SE Build 1.05) from here.
  • If you have a previous version of Ad-Aware installed, during the installation of the new version you will be prompted to uninstall or keep the older version - be sure to uninstall the previous version.
  • After installing Ad-aware, you will be prompted to update the program and run a full scan. De-select all boxes so that it does not run.
  • Manually run "Ad-Aware SE Personal" and from the main screen Click on "Check for Updates Now".
  • Once the definitions have been updated:
  • Reconfigure Ad-Aware for Full Scan as per the following instructions:
    • Launch the program, and click on the Gear at the top of the start screen.
    • Under General Settings the following boxes should all be checked off: (Checked will be indicated by a green circle with a check mark in it, Un-Checked is a red circle with an X in it. If it is greyed out, those features are only available in the retail version.)
      • "Automatically save logfile"
      • Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal"
      • Safe Mode (always request confirmation)
      • Prompt to update outdated confirmation) - Change to 7 days.
    • Click the "Scanning" button (On the left side).
    • Under Drives & Folders, select "Scan within Archives"
    • Click "Click here to select Drives + folders" and select your installed hard drives.
    • Under Memory & Registry, select all options.
    • Click the "Advanced" button (On the left hand side).
    • Under "Shell Integration", select "Move deleted files to Recycle Bin".
    • Under "Log-file detail", select all options.
    • Click on the "Defaults" button on the left.
    • Type in the full url of what you want as your default homepage and searchpage e.g. http://www.google.com.
    • Click the "Tweak" button (Again, on the left hand side).
    • Expand "Scanning Engine" by clicking on the "+" (Plus) symbol and select the following:
      • "Unload recognized processes during scanning."
      • "Obtain command line of scanned processes"
      • "Scan registry for all users instead of current user only"
    • Under "Cleaning Engine", select the following:
      • "Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion."
      • "During removal, unload explorer and IE if necessary"
      • "Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot."
      • "Delete quarrantined objects after restoring"
    • Click on "Safety Settings" and select "Write-protect system files after repair (Hosts file, etc)"
    • Click on "Proceed" to save these Preferences.
    • Click on the "Scan Now" button on the left.
    • Under "Select Scan Mode, be sure to select "Use Custom Scanning Options".
  • Close all programs except ad-aware.
  • Click on "Next" in the bottom right corner to start the scan.
  • Run the Ad-Aware scan and allow it to remove everything it finds and then REBOOT - Even if not prompted to.
  • After you log back in, Ad-Aware may run to finalize the scan and remove any locked files that it may of found. Allow it to finish.
Plug-Ins for Ad-Aware (VX2 Cleaner)
Download the free VX2 Cleaner here
  • Close Ad-Aware SE build 1.05 and Ad-Watch (if running)
  • Install the VX2 Cleaner
  • Start Ad-Aware SE build 1.05
  • Go to “Plug-ins”
  • Select the VX2 Cleaner plug-in and click “Run Plugin”
  • If your computer isn't infected, click "close"
  • If your computer is infected:
  • Select “Clean System”
  • Reboot your computer
  • Scan your computer with Ad-Aware
  • Remove any VX2 objects detected
  • Reboot your computer again
  • Run a second scan to make sure the files have been removed from your computer
Virus warnings while performing a scan with Ad-Aware
While performing a scan with Ad-Aware, a background antivirus monitor may issue an alert, stating that a virus has been found in the temporary directory (%temp%) for the current user. This does not necessarily mean your computer has been infected with an active virus. Most antivirus resident scanners will not scan compressed files and only monitor your memory for the sign of an active viral process.

During a scan, Ad-Aware will temporarily decompress files to scan their contents without activating the content, but in doing so, the file is noticed by the antivirus' resident scanner.

Also, some antivirus applications include an option to quarantine infected files, and when Ad-Aware decompresses these quarantined files, the antivirus background scanner detects the virus moving outside the quarantine area. To avoid this you can either remove the quarantined files via your antivirus application, or have Ad-Aware ignore the antivirus program's quarantine folders/files during a scan.

ClarkClark,

Those programs fixxed a lot of things, so hopefully we will get everythign this time =). You may have already downloaded the programs I am going to have you use, but incase you deleted hthem, I am going to give you the full instructions on downloading and running them.

You may wish to print these instructions out

Please download CleanUp!40.exe. We will use this program later.

Right click Here and select Save As to download WinHelp2002's DelDomains.inf. Please save the file somewhere you can find it like on the desktop.

Next, run this inf file by right clicking on it and select Install.

You have a CoolWebSearch infection.

Download CWShredder here to its own folder.

Update CWShredder

* Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
* Click Check For Update
* Close CWShredder

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel(if present):

MediaAccK.exe

Please note any other programs that you dont recognize in that list in your next response

Please delete these folders using Windows Explorer(if present):

C:\Program Files\Media Access
C:\WINDOWS\isrvs

Please delete these files using Windows Explorer(if present):

C:\WINDOWS\drexinit.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\private-zone.exe

This file you will have to open the START menu and the click on SEARCH type in the file path and then using windows explorer, delete the file. Make sure you close the search window before you delete the file.

eset40.exe

Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about.

After that, Reboot.

Next we will run CleanUp!, the program which we downloaded earlier.

Click on Start, Programs, CleanUp!, CleanUp!.

A dialog will appear. Click on the button labeled "CleanUp!".

When complete, CleanUp! will prompt you to reboot, please allow it to reboot your system.

Once the above is complete, please post a fresh HiJackThis Log for me to look at.

Also, please let me know if you have any questions.

ClarkClark,

Your HiJackThis log looks clean except for one thing.

Please complete the following:

Right click Here and select Save As to download WinHelp2002's DelDomains.inf. Please save the file somewhere you can find it like on the desktop. To run the inf file, right click on it and select Install.

Regarding eset40.exe, open up search again and note where search tells you that file is. Now please close the search box and open up Windows Explorer, and look for that file in Windows Explorer. You should then be able to delete the file from Windows Explorer.

If it will not let you delete it in Windows Explorer, please let me know, and we can remove it a different way.

Once you have completed the above, please reboot your computer and post a fresh HiJackThis log for me.

ClarkClark,

Sorry about the confusion, when you right click on the DelDomains file and select install, it runs the program. What is does is cleans your restricted and trusted zones in your Internet Browser.

Can you post a fresh HiJackThis log so I can see if we removed that last of this?

Thanks!

ClarkClark,

I can look at your mom's log, but please post it in a new topic in the HiJackThis forum, and PM me the link, it will make it easier to look at, so we dont get these two logs confused.

Here is some information on keeping your computer spyware free in the future:

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  • AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  • SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  • IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  • CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  • Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  • Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
  • Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein
