Hi, folks. Thanks in advance for your invaluable assistance. I have complied with everything on the "Read Before Posting a Hijack This Log" and I humbly submit my Hijack This log to you. I think all my problems began when I got infected with desktop traffic. Now its popupsearches and leadermarkets (which I think is desktop traffic's cousin). I am forever indebted to you geeks for whatever assistance you can offer! And without further ado....

Hi TJHillgardner and welcome to the GTG forums. After reviewing your log I see a few items that require our attention. Please proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = about:blank
O1 - Hosts: 64.91.255.87 www.dcsresearch.com
O2 - BHO: RsyncHlpr Class - {16B238D5-80DE-47CE-8F17-B3ECE2C2248D} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\rsyncmon.dll
O2 - BHO: ohb - {999A06FF-10EF-4A29-8640-69E99882C26B} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\nsu840.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RSync] C:\WINDOWS\system32\netsync.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [gah95on6] C:\WINDOWS\system32\gah95on6.exe
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #2

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Find the following files/folders and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):C:\WINDOWS\system32\rsyncmon.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nsu840.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\netsync.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\gah95on6.exe

Note: If you receive any error messages while trying to delete any of the above files/folders then reboot into Safe Mode and try to delete them again. See the instructions below on how to boot into Safe Mode.

If needed, start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer in Safe Mode.
  • As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
If you rebooted into Safe Mode reboot normally now.

Step #3

Download CleanUp! and install it. Start CleanUp! and click on the CleanUp! button. Let it run to completion. It may take a few minutes depending on the size of your hard drive so be patient.

Step #4

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

Hey OT. I cannot say thank you enough. Actually, I think I finally rid myself of the green highlights last night using TDS3. But undoubtedly I still have issues like Nail.exe and Aurora and I think my chkdsk utility doesn't run when I reboot despite a "Run Chkdsk" warning. But more specifically:

STEP # 1 - Successful
STEP # 2 - Successful (Didn't need to reboot in Safe Mode)
STEP # 3 - The download page at stevengould is experiencing technical difficulties and I cannot download that software right now. I ran the Windows Disk Cleanup utility on my C and D drives. Is that Okay?
STEP # 4 - And here is my HJT log:

Hi TJHillgardner. You have the 'Triumverant'! This nail.exe infection along with Aurora popups and the SvcProc service is rather new. Do you feel special?

Let's see if we can take care of these.

Step #1

Part 1
  • Click Start>Run, type services.msc into the Open editbox and click the Ok button.
  • Locate the System Startup Service service and click the Stop button.
  • In the Startup type dropdown select Disabled.
  • Click the Apply button and then the Ok button.
  • Close the Services window
Part 2
  • Click Start>Run, type cmd into the Open editbox and click the Ok button.
  • Copy/paste the line below into the Command Prompt window and press the Enter key:
    • sc delete SvcProc
  • Now type cd\windows and press the Enter key. You should see C:\Windows>.
  • Type nail.exe /FullRemove and press the Enter key.
  • Close the Command Prompt window
Step #2

Run AdAware SE

Download, install, update, configure and run a scan with Ad-aware SE:
  • Download and Install AdAware SE Personal, keeping the default options. However, some of the settings will need to be changed before your first scan.
  • Close ALL windows except Ad-Aware SE.
  • Click on the‘world’ icon at the top right of the Ad-Aware SE window and let AdAware SE update the reference list for the adware and malware.
  • Once the update is finished click on the ‘Gear’ icon (second from the left at the top of the window) to access the preferences/settings window:
    • In the ‘General’ window make sure the following are selected in green:
      • Under Safety:
        • Automatically save log-file
      • Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
      • Safe Mode (always request confirmation)
    • Under Definitions:
      • Prompt to update outdated definitions - set the number of days
  • Click on the ‘Scanning’ button on the left and select in green:
    • Under Driver, Folders & Files:
      • Scan Within Archives
    • Under Select drives & folders to scan:
      • choose all hard drives
    • Under Memory & Registry: all green
      • Scan Active Processes
      • Scan Registry
      • Deep Scan Registry
      • Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
      • Scan my Hosts file
  • Click on the ‘Advanced’ button on the left and select in green:
    • Under Shell Integration:
      • Move deleted files to recycle bin
    • Under Logfile Detail Level: all green
      • include addtional object information
      • DESELECT - include negligible objects information
      • include environment information
    • Under Alternate Data Streams:
      • Don't log streams smaller than 0 bytes
      • Don't log ADS with the following names: CA_INOCULATEIT
  • Click the ‘Tweak’ button and select in green:
    • Under ‘Scanning Engine’:
      • Unload recognized processes during scanning
      • Scan registry for all users instead of current user only
    • Under ‘Cleaning Engine’:
      • Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot
    • Under Log Files:
      • Include basic Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
      • Include additional Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
      • Please do not check: Include Module list in logfile
  • Click on ‘Proceed’ to save the settings.
  • Click ‘Start’
  • Choose 'Perform Full System Scan'
  • DESELECT "Search for negligible risk entries", as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.
  • Click ‘Next’ and Ad-Aware SE will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected and clean automatically.
  • If Ad-Aware SE finds bad entries, you will receive a list of what it found in the window
  • Save the log file when it asks and then click ‘Finish’
  • REBOOT to complete the removal of what Ad-Aware SE found.
Step #3

Let's use a different program than CleanUp!. Download CCleaner and install it. Start CCleaner and click on the Run Cleaner button in the lower right-hand corner.

Step #4

Download FindIt2000XP.zip and unzip it to its own folder. Navigate to the folder you unzipped the files to and double-click on the find.bat file. This will scan your hard drive and could take a few minutes depending on the size and number of files but when it is complete Notepad will open up with a log file in it. Copy/paste all of the information from that file back here in the next step.

Step #5

OK. Start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file and the log file from the find.bat scan back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

Okay, Old Timer. Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, but life intervened. Did I say thank you, again? If you ever get a parking ticket in NYC, I'm your man! That's my area of expertise. Okay, here is my report:

STEP# 1 - Done. No problems.
STEP # 2 - When I ran AdAware SE Personal, it hung when it was scanning C:\Windows\Prefetch. So I ran a custom scan of everything EXCEPT the C:\Windows\Prefetch directory and found three critical objects which I removed.
STEP # 3 - Done. No unusual incidents to report.
STEP # 4 - Done. I will post the FindItNT2000 log after the HJT log.
STEP # 5 - Done. Here is the HJT log:

Hi TJHillgardner. That looks better. Now please do the following:

Step #1

We need to disable TeaTimer so it does not interfere with the fixes we are about to do.
  • Run Spybot-S&D
  • Go to the Mode menu, and make sure Advanced Mode is selected
  • On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
  • Uncheck Resident TeaTimer and OK any prompts
  • Restart your computer.
Step #2

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {6685509E-B47B-4f47-8E16-9A5F3A62F683} - file://C:\Program Files\Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker\Sy350\Tp350\scri350a.htm (file missing) (HKCU)

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #3

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Find the following files/folders and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe (this should be gone already but verify that it is not there)
C:\Program Files\Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker\ <--folder

Note: If you receive any error messages while trying to delete any of the above files/folders then reboot into Safe Mode and try to delete them again. See the instructions below on how to boot into Safe Mode.

If needed, start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer in Safe Mode.
  • As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
If you rebooted into Safe Mode reboot normally now.

Step #4

Download CleanUp! and install it. Start CleanUp! and click on the Options button. Make sure that the checkbox for Delete Prefetch Files is checked and then click the Ok button to get back to the main screen. Now click the CleanUp! button. Let it run to completion. It may take a few minutes depending on the size of your hard drive so be patient.

Step #5

Re-enable TeaTimer
  • Run Spybot-S&D
  • Go to the Mode menu, and make sure Advanced Mode is selected
  • On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
  • Check Resident TeaTimer and OK any prompts
  • Restart your computer.
Step #6

OK. Start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

Okay Old Timer. I'm baaaaack.

STEP # 1 - No problem
STEP # 2 - No problem
STEP # 3 - No problem, I think. Nail.exe was in the Windows folder when I went to verify its removal. Oddly, I deleted it to the Recycle Bin but it did not delete. Then I tried it a second time and it did delete. I did not restart in Safe Mode because I was able to delete the two files without going there, even if it took two tries.
STEP # 4 - No problem. CleanUp took about five seconds despite that I have an 80 Gig HD. And despite that it was not included in your instructions, because CleanUp advised that I should reboot upon closing the program, I did so. Was that a mistake?
STEP # 5 - No problem, except that I am still getting the Nail.exe chkdsk message on restart and Aurora is still active on my system.
STEP # 6 - Here is my HJT log:
