Stumped - Fonts Gone Wild - Virus, Spyware, Malware Removal

Working on a new machine (less than a week old), Dell Dimension 3000 running XP w/SP2. I immediately installed ZoneAlarm, AVG, Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware on it. These are the tools that kept me "clean" in my old 98SE environment. I have since added Microsoft's Antispyware and run HouseCall, as well.

Problem: The default font displaying in my Windows programs, as well as what displays when I visit websites where a font isn't specified in the coding, is this truly annoying sans serif font.....in the Lucida family, it seems. It should be a serif font and I'm going nuts trying to figure out what's up.

This happened once previously on my old 98SE system. I scanned it with Ad-Aware and the problem was solved. Not so this time. I can't find any info on any kind of malware known issues that would alter how my fonts are displayed, other than those that alter font size in IE.

My default fonts in IE, Firefox and Windows are all set to factory/default settings. I can't glean anything from my HJT log but I hope that someone else might. I'd really hate to have to System Restore this new machine after only a few days! Logfile follows. Any input would be greatly appreciated. -Michelle

Hi crazybooklady and welcome to the GTG forums. I looked thorugh your log but did not see any signs of viruses or malware at this time. Your log is clean.

As for the font issue, when did this start? After an application was installed or other major setting was changed/updated? The default font for XP id Tahoma as it has been since Win98. You can look at the properties for the various system areas by right-clicking on an empty area of the desktop and then choosing Properties>Appearance>Advanced. Here you can change teh fonts for all of the various windows areas. If you want to make a system wide change just select a different Theme and apply it. This will cause all display setting system wide to be set to that Theme's default.
