My original windows cd doesn't seem to work anymore, can i still use it's serial number to install a fresh windows on another computer using my friend's windows xp cd? The windows cd i had was probably before SP1, his is SP2, is it possible for me to still use my old serial number? or would i have to find a windows cd that was before sp1?

As long as the versions are the same e.g.- Pro or Home and you are doing a clean install then you shouldn't have any issues.
