Hey everyone,

This problem accured twice to me,
After I downloaded and installed beta SP1 for vista, 32bit programs (firefox, msn messenger, IE7 32bit) couldnt access the internet (and even crashed oftenly)
althought 64bit programs could access the internet normally (IE7 64bit), so I just reformatted and reinstalled vista.

Now it happend again, this time without any apparent reason,
It happend tonight after I ran windows update (it installed 2 updates: Synaptics PS/2 Port TouchPd, HP Quick Launch Buttons 64)
and now the issue is back again.

Again, it's very important you understand that this issue happens only when I run 32bit programs but when I run native 64bit programs everything works fine.
I think it's a problem with the 32bit emulator but I have no idea how to fix it.

Help? Please?

Hello,

First I'd like to donkey punch neil for suggesting that it was an emulator problem. Rice intelligently described his problem in detail and suggesting that IE7 32-bit won't run in it's own emulator is not an intelligent response. He is also probably aware that all 32-bit programs won't work in an emulated environment.

Now for my fix and hopefully a universal fix. This requires reseting the Winsock protocol. As far as I am aware, Vista 64 has seperate Winsock protocols for 32-bit and 64-bit programs. With one of the newer Windows Updates, it seems to have corrupted the 32-bit Winsock and left the 64-bit intact. Here is the fix that worked for me:

The following is a close copy/paste to Microsofts directions on resetting Winsock.
  • Click Start, and in Start Search, type cmd.
  • Right-click the cmd entry that appears in the search results, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.
  • At the command prompt, type the following, and then press ENTER: netsh winsock reset

Then, you should see the following message:
Successfully reset the Winsock Catalog. You must restart the computer in order to complete the reset.

  • Restart the computer.
Let us know if this works for you like it did for me.

Cheers Timmy,

I've contacted users on other forums and it looked like we had something in common, we all had NOD32 anti-virus installed.
After you uninstall NOD32 everything works just fine, also there's a fix to the problem but I can remember the exact solution.

Hope your solution helps too :)
