Limiting Recent Items list

When I right click-open my recent items menu, I see that it stores about 46 items in it but only shows around 15 of them in the small list, all at the beginning of the alphabet. Is there any way I can limit the space for recent items or limit the number of items stored in the list so that I can see the fifteen most recent, from a-z?
