So here is the deal:

This is my Mom's computer... she keeps getting infected by spyware and I keep getting called over to fix her computer.

I finally got her to start running Norton Anti-Virus on a somewhat regular basis and I set it up to run a weekly scan besides that.

Presently her computer has a hijacked desktop background, random pop-ups occur even when not surfing the internet and a search page interrupts casual web-browsing.

I've followed all of the suggested links and her computer still runs extremely slow as though there are processes running in the background at all times.

Anyway... here is my log... and if you can fix this computer I believe you should get some sort of star next to your login!!!

I can't begin to thank you enough for trying to help.

~Rob

Hello Swingkid02, Welcome to the Geeks to go Forums. My Name is Jfcap, and I will be helping you clean your system.

You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions incase you need to boot into safe mode, where your internet will be unavailable.

Lets get started!

You are running HijackThis from the Desktop; please create a new folder for HiJackThis and move the program into the new folder

Please download LSPFix from here

Run LSPfix and place a check against the I know what I am doing checkbox.

Highlight every instance of the following names and move them from the Keep to the Remove panel. Be sure to move nothing other than the files listed below!

newdotnet6_38.dll' missing

When done, click on Finish to exit the program; do not use the X in the top right-hand corner as nothing will happen!

Next, go here to download the free KAV Personal 5.0 Trial (good for 30 days)
Next, please click here and learn how to install and use KAV. Follow the instructions to Install and run a scan.

Once you have completed this, please Post a fresh HiJackThis log for me to look at, and we will continue to remove any remaining malware from there.

Let me know if you have any questions.

-Justin

Wow I'm back on the internet!!!

I ran the antivirus software you recommended and then I couldn't get back on the internet until today. Every time I tried to open internet explorer or even AOL it would shut down as soon as it connected.

Anyway... right now I'm online and I'm hoping I'll be able to get back on to check this post.

As of right now my computer is running beatifully, however I don't trust it.... and I would like you to still look at the Hijack This Post below. I followed all of your instruction as then did the following to get back on-line.

I put my computer back in safe mode... (after the hijack log)
I ran all the spyware cleaning programs again
I ran the norton system doctor
I ran the disk defragmenting program\
I uninstalled the KAV program since it was the last thing that ran before I lost internet connection and since it wasn't in trial mode anyway. Here is the Hijack this post from before I did all of the above... I'm going to try and re-run it in normal startup mode and post a second post immediatly... however don't know if I'll be able to get back on-line... we'll see though... so if you do see two Hijack this logs then the second one is the most recent.

Thanks so much for the help so far!!!
Rob

Okay.... well.... make sure you read my post right before this... it completely explains what is going on.... however my whole thing about "my computer running beautifully" wasn't quite accurate. It does run great without processing the startup... I was still running it through msconfig... not so much with full startup.

So here is an up to date logfile.

Thanks for looking at it... and please let me know what to do next.... I feel like I'm close to being clean for the first time in years.

:-)

Rob

Swingkid02,

Here are the next fixes :tazz:

Right click Here and select Save As to download WinHelp2002's DelDomains.inf. Please save the file somewhere you can find it like on the desktop. To run the inf file, right click on it and select Install. Once you click install, the file will make all of the changes it needs to.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Okay... I did as told...

When looking for the programs to delete I found none of them... which I assume is good.

The programs I didn't recognize were win-dh, d-helper web driver, and learn 2 player.

Also... I only found one of the list of individual files on the list to delete... I deleted it.

I feel my computer is running much better already... after rebooting.

My other concern is how many freaking programs are running on startup, especially since this computer needs more memory as it is. Is there an easy way to disable startup programs?

And I'm sure you'll tell me this before you cut the umbilical cord... but how do I keep all of this from happening again.

Thanks again for helping... I'm extremely impressed with how quickly I am getting replies on this website.

Rob,

If you do not find any of the files, that is good news. Just to be safe, lets make sure that they are not hidden.

Set your computer to show all files:* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
Now go back and look for the files I listed above, if you see them, please delete them, if you do not see them, then thats good news.

Once we get your log cleaned up, I will give you some tips on how to keep your system clean in the future.

And as for the fast responses, you just seem to reply whenever I check my email =).

As for those programs you did not recognize in Add/Remove programs, I will get back to you on those, as well as a HiJackThis fix, later tonight or in the morning.

Let me know if you have any more questions

SwingKid02,

You have a CoolWebSearch infection.

Download CWShredder here to its own folder.

Update CWShredder

* Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
* Click Check For Update
* Close CWShredder

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.seekerbar...spx?tb_id=50154
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = http://www.seekerbar...spx?tb_id=50154
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,CustomizeSearch = res://C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\toolbar.dll/sa
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://www.seekerbar...spx?tb_id=50154
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Dge] C:\WINDOWS\Bij.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Yahoo! Pager] 1
O16 - DPF: Pop Fu by pogo - http://popfu.pogo.co...u-ob-assets.cab

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please delete these files using Windows Explorer(if present):

C:\WINDOWS\Bij.exe

Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about.

After that, Reboot.

Next, please post a fresh HiJackThis log for me to look at.

I ran CW shredder and again it found no infections. This has been pretty standard since the first time I ran it. And I did follow you instructions exactly.

I fixed those entries in hijack this and this is the most recent log file.

Swingkid02,

When you run CWshredder, you are updating it before you run it (while in normal windows) right?

I know you said you followed everything, but im just double checking

Swingkid02,

Actually, your HiJackThis log looks clean to me.

Are you still noticing any problems?

And other than that I am most interested in how to keep this from happening again and as to whether firefox is a better browser to use and if so how to install download and make it my primary browser.

I did run CWSHREDDER after update in both safe and regular mode by the way... just saw that post.

Thanks again,
Rob

And I just saw your newest post... I'll look for it in a little bit... the fix on the mouse.

Looks like we both are on these freaking machines late at night huh?

This fix is only for XP & Windows 2000 at the moment It will not work on Windows 98 or ME

Download and Save Spywadfix to your computer from this link:
http://www.thespykil...s/spywadfix.exe

It will automatically extract to c:\spywad where it needs to be to run and will automatically open the remove spywad.vbs script for you ready to paste in the line mentioned below.
If you have script blocking enabled you will get a warning about a malicious script wanting to run. Please allow this script to run.

It is not malicious.
It will open an Input box. Paste this line into the box

C:\WINDOWS\Obl.exe

The script will kill that process, backup and then delete any matching files in System32 and your Windows Directory. It will create a log of all files deleted. This log file will be named Spywad.txt and be located inside the C:\Spywad Folder. The backups will also be located in two subfolders there. One named Systems and the other named Window.

The script will search the Windows Directory and delete desktop.html and popup.html if they exist. It will add entries to the log if these files are found and deleted.

It will then kill Explorer. You will lose your taskbar and desktop. It will repair the registry entries returning your windows default desktop and context menu functions.
It will restart Explorer.

** Script Does not remove the orphaned run entries.

Finally, it will Run hijackthis so that you can remove the orphaned run entries and anything else as instructed by your Advisor on the forums.

When in HiJackThis, look for the below entry,

If hijackthis doesn't start, run it manually.

When finished, post the contents of Spywad.txt and a new Hijackthis log.
