I've just recently noticed this problem, since I haven't put any disks in my computer for a while.

So anyways, I tried putting the disk for a game into the computer, and when I clicked on its shortcut it said "Please insert correct disk and try again". When I ejected the disk, it was spinning in the tray at like a million rpm. I tried with a second disk and a music CD, and the same thing happened.

Is there a way I can fix this at home, or do I need to get it repaired?

It's not worth the expense of repair unless it's one of those expensive units that can also read blu-ray discs. CD-writers and even DVD-writers are cheap enough to replace nowadays and that's what you should do.
