Windows XP searh function empty

I've had multiple problems, the latest being with the search function from the start bar - it just comes up blank. I was recently infected with backdoor.prorat which interfered with Norton antivirus 2004. I got rid of the trojan horse, but Norton would not run scheduled scans so I uninstalled it from the disk, but my cd is working intermittently and I've not been able to reload it. I've run hijack this and below is the log it gave me - I haven't been here for help before so really, really sorry if I'm doing the wrong thing! I am the world's least competent computer person and I've been away from the machine for a while and come back to discover other people have been using it. Lastly, I am on broadband and connected with multiple laptops on the same wireless modem, if that makes a difference. If anyone can help, I'd be hugely grateful, Many thanks, Zim

Please move Hijack This to a permanent folder (i.e. C:\HJT). This ensures backups are saved and accessible.

Go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

Be sure you're able to view hidden files, and remove the following files in bold (if found):
C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.exe
It's likely a virus, the legitimate explorer.exe is located in the C:WINNT\ folder
Reboot your PC.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log, and let us know how your system's working. <_<

Admin, Thank you so much, you've been very kind. My search window is now back - after doing (I hope!) what you told me to do. In fact the machine has speeded up again and all that remains is for me to get Norton Antivirus to open. I managed to install it earlier (the cd obliged for a change) but it still won't open, though the laptop says it's installed. Anyway, thanks again, I am very grateful, Zim

Congratulations! Your system is CLEAN <_<

How do you prevent spyware from being installed again? We strongly recommend installing SpywareBlaster (it's free for personal use).

Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
Consumes no system resources.

Download, run, check for updates, download updates, select all, protect against checked. All done. Check for updates every couple of weeks. If you have any errors running the program like a missing file see the link at the bottom of the javacool page.

It's also very important to keep your system up to date to avoid unnecessary security risks. Click Here to make sure that you have the latest patches for Windows.

It's okay to delete the Hijack This folder if everything is working okay.

If you can't get Norton to work, consider uninstalling it and using the free version of AVG. It's just as good--and free:
