pop-ups and spyware/malware[RESOLVED]

;) I have been fighting with my computer for 6 days before happening upon your website. Prior to finding your site, i did the majority of required spyware checks in normal and safe modes. When I think I've got it, the pop-ups keep coming...sometimes several at a time. I completed every one of your required steps, with each one finding spyware, malware, and trojan downloads. I remove successfully and after I reboot, the pop-ups are back and so are the different spywares. I have a log that I will attach and look foward to any help you might have for me. I don't want to take my computer back to the day it was born! I will lose too much stuff that isn't backed up! Help...I'm a newbie!

It's been a few days, and I'm not sure how this works! Will you reply to my post and send an email, or do I need to keep checking? I'm losing my mind over all these darn pop-ups! :tazz: Help!

Hello and welcome to Geeks To Go.

Lets start out with some general scans and see if we cant clean things up a little.

+++++ Step 1 +++++

Please download Ewido security suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install Ewido security suite
  • Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will prompt you to update click the OK button
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Click on Start
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
    • Binder
    • Crypter
    • Archives
  • Click on Start Scan
  • Let the program scan the machine
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report
  • Save the report to your desktop
+++++ Step 2 +++++

Please run an on-line virus scan at Kaspersky OnLine Scan or if that doesnt work, you can use TrendMicro or BitDefender. (Please post the results of the scan(s) in your next reply)

+++++ Step 3 +++++

Update HiJackThis
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click Open the Misc Tools Section
  • Click Check for update online
+++++ Step 4 +++++

After that, I will need to see two different logs from HiJackThis. The first is the normal log like you posted here. To get the other one, follow these directions.

Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

Post back with those logs and we can continue from there.

I'm sorry if this is redundant! I replied using the pm (?) button so that it would go back to the person who was helping me earlier...hope I did it correctly ;) In case I didn't, I'm going to post here as well and hope for a response!

I went through all the things that I was asked to do. I had trouble with Kaspersky, so I used TrendMicro and BitDefender. TrendMicro didn't give me a chance to copy results...(I'm sure I messed up somehow!) but it said I had an uncleanable trojan that it did delete.. I will attach BitDefenders scan results as well as those from hijack this.

Thank you in advance for all your input and help! Couldn't do it w/out you :tazz:

You have the latest version of VX2. Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please delete these files using Windows Explorer(if present):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\n20050308.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\seeve.exe

After that, Reboot.

After you reboot, post back with how things are running and a fresh HiJackThis log.

:tazz: so far so good...no pop-ups. after the final reboot, I noticed that there was a backup folder on my desktop. Do I need to do something with this? btw, where in Michigan are you from? I'm in Clinton Township!

btw...what anti-spyware program do you recommend I run? Currently I run Norton, but I don't think it's doing it for me.

Norton is actually your antivirus. I have used it before and havent been too impressed with it. I now use AVG antivirus which has a totally free version.

Just a quick cleanup thing to make sure you areall set.

Right click Here and select Save As to download WinHelp2002's DelDomains.inf. Please save the file somewhere you can find it like on the desktop. To run the inf file, right click on it and select Install.

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  • AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  • SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  • IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  • CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  • Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  • Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
  • Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
  • Weather Watcher - Free taskbar weather program that is free, malware free, and resource light.
