Please help with Trojan-Spy.HTML.Smitfraud.c

This is the first time using a forum such as this. My girlfriend inadvertantly downloaded the IBIS toolbar. Besides that hassle, I have been infected as a result. I have followed the directions, and I think I still have a problem. I ran 5 different programs (3 of your recommended), but none are seeming to find it.

My desktop says: "Security warning. A fatal error has occured in IE at 0028:C0011E36 in VXD VMM(01) + 0010E36. Error was caused by Trojan-Spy.HTML.Smitfraud.c . System cannot function in normal mode. Please check security settings. Scan your PC with any available antivirus\spyware remover program to fix the problem."

Other than that, there seem to be no ill effects. It is running a little slow, but I think it is from all the spyware I have installed scanning my every move. Could the virus be gone, but the warning on the desktop still be there? If so, how do I get rid of the warning? I still have use of all my icons. If I'm still infected, how can I get this removed? I have no money right now. Would it be effective to install XP and all of my legitimate programs on a seperate drive and eliminate the offending drive?

I am still learning about computers, and I am freaked out about this. It would be greatly appreciated if someone could give me a hand. Thank you.

Hello,
I have Trojan-Spy.HTML.Smitfraud.c

I posted a couple of days ago, and I have been keeping track of some of the other discussions concerning Smitfraud. I have removed tons of stuff from my computer. Thank you. I think I am close to having this resolved. I had the blue screen with the error message, but eventually deleted it to the black screen (with missing tabs from my display, like everyone else). Besides a few more things to get rid of, I'm trying to get my wall paper back.


I have run about 6 different "scans" on it , and have tried a number of your suggestions. Please help me.
Under the HijackThis log, is an activescan log.

Get a copy of winsockxpfix.exe before you do anything. This is just a safety
item in case you can't get on the internet afterwards. You just run it and
things should work OK after it reboots your system.

Also download and install ccleaner.exe from http://www.ccleaner.com. Don't let
it clean anything yet.

shutdown and reboot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key when you see the PC
maker's logo.
Keep tapping until it tells you it is going to Safe Mode or you see the Safe
Mode menu. Select the top option.

Run HijackThis and just do a Scan only. Check then Fix
Checked the following:

Wait 60 seconds and repeat the scan. Did any of the above come back? IF so
leave HijackThis up and right click on the clock and select Task Manager. Then
Processes. Find Explorer.exe, right click on it and select End Process. The
desktop will disappear but HijackThis should still be there. IF you don't see
it switch to Applications in Task Manager and highlight it there then press
Switch To or just double click on it. Check and Fix Checked the above again.
Restart Explorer by Task Manager, File, New Task(Run), explorer.exe, OK.



Now run ccleaner.exe. On the first page, uncheck everything but the two lines
that have the word Temporary in them then Run Cleaner.

Start, Run, regedit, OK

Navigate down to:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies

and find the subkey System under the Policies. Highlight it and hit the Delete button and then tell it OK.

Close the regedit.


Reboot into normal mode and run another HijackThis log and post it. Let's
see how we did.
