OK, I tried to have the DELL people help me but they didn't fix the problem and now my warranty has run out. Please help! Something's definitely wrong with my relatively new DELL (purchased in 2006) ... I put in a DVD, and it revs for a few seconds, then stops, and the PC doesn't recognize that it's there. Thus, I cannot play a DVD in my DVD/CD drive. ANNOYING!!! It was suggested before that I needed the decoder? But I've downloaded decoders, and installed them, and still NOTHING works! :) :) I'd really like to be able to play DVDs...

I have a:

Dell Dimension: DM051

with: HL-DT-ST DVD+RW GSA-H21N
and: XP Pro - Service Pack 2

Thanks for your help!

Try using VLC Media Player: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/. All the codecs are built in so if your are still having issues then it is most likely not a lack of a codec/decoder.

If it shows as not even having a DVD in Windows Explorer then there is a good chance there is a problem with the drive.

Let us know if VLC works.

OK, so that did not help--it still doesn't see the dvd in the drive. So I guess it must be the drive. Thanks anyway! :)
