I recently re-formatted a disc, installed Win ME and then upgraded it to Windows XP Home (Upgrade) and found the same problem with a right-click anywhere on the desktop.
First Dr Watson was intervening saying something was wrong. I closed these windows but then an hourglass would sit on the screen looking at me.
Only way to fix this was to kill the DRWTSN.EXE process a couple of times.
Another right-click would then start the cycle again.
I disabled DRWTSN32.exe
in the registry. Then I found the right click on the desktop caused an error in explorer.exe - something about error writing to a memory location - in other words this was the error that Dr Watson was detecting. But by itself this didn't really help me.
Eventually I thought about the graphics driver.
Before installing Win XP, I had installed the Nvidia graphics driver for Win ME and all
was well. After the Win XP upgrade the screen looked fine. But I realised that I may have to install the specific driver for WinXP/2000. I did this, and, what do you know,
the right-click problem went away.
Just my $.2 worth.

I had a problem like this. I accidently unchecked the Show Desktop Icons but thought I could just right click and solve it easily. But I couldn't right click. This was shortly after my computer was infected with some viruses so I thought that was the problem. But after a while I solved it and this is how...
First go here
http://www.kellys-ko...m/xp_tweaks.htm
Scroll down to 72 and click it
Open it and it will say it disabled the desktop. If you look the desktop should be white with a restore desktop button. If not enable it and see. I think I had to disable, enable then disable again. But when it is on the white screen I could right click and check the Show Desktop Icons again and there they were.
