Welcome to Geeks to Go.

This situation is fairly common. The drive uses a seperate laser for DVDs and CDs. When a laser goes it is done. Luckily these drives aern't terribly expensive. They sell on newegg.com for about $40.

Usually the lifespan of these drives is anywhere from 2-5 years.
