Everyone has to thank ID Software for their kindness with their game engines. After Quake 3 was opened up, some amazing games have come out that are perfect for impromptu LAN parties, considering you won't need licenses. Not to mention some amazing E-Sports based games, realistic, and not so realistic shooters. Heres a list of just a few.

UrbanTerror - Counter-Strike-Like free shooter. Great tactical realism based game.
World Of Padman - Fast paced, abstract deathmatch game. Bright colors, and mouse sized players make a kitchen a battle ground.
Warsow - Cell shaded, E-Sports, french developed game. Fast paced, and brutal. Some skill required.
OpenArena - Quake 3 recreation on the released engine.
Tremulous - First Person Shooter with and RTS Blend
